Scout ships clumping together

Hi, I'm fairly new to the game.  I made 4 Scout ships and set them all to "autoexplore".  I've noticed that they all seem to clump together and follow each-other around instead of spreading out.  Obviously I would prefer that they all spread out and go in different directions.

Is this just a random chance thing or is this a behavior that other people have noticed with "autoexplore"?

No, it's 'normal' for auto-explore to do this.  It's a waste of space.  You can explore manually much more efficiently.
