Getting into Galactic Civilization II

Greetings folks, before I start I'd like to apologize for the wall of text, but bare with me as if things go well I plan on becoming a very active member of the GC community.

So, I recently purchased Galactic Civilization II Ultimate Edition on the Steam Winter sale and I must say i love it, particularly the extensive Diplomacy/Faction interaction and customization, which I consider the best in any x4 i have played thus far. I have played 3 games so far, all with my own custom civilization - The Nexus Consortium, a multicultural coalition that focuses on Research and Science.

I have read however that Twilight of the Arnor has some problems, mainly AI issues, so I have a few questions I hope people can answer without telling me to read the rest of the forum. I've given the forum a look and a lot of the information is muddled, not to mention having to devote several days to extensive forum study is really depressing, so Im hoping you people will be kind enough to help compress what I need to one thread.

 

My questions are as follows.

 

1. I am looking for the very best Bug fix mod that fixes most problems with Twilight of the Arnor. Can anyone name such a mod? An opinion on such a mod, or more than one, and an actual link would be appreciated.

 

2. I've been getting Out of Memory errors/crashes on my last game, on a massive map with max races. The Drengi are on the warpath and have lots of ships, so i imagine their weird "can summon multiple fleets per turn" thing is putting a strain on memory. I have 3 cores active, would disabling two of them make the crashes less frequent? Is there a way to allow more than 2GB of RAM allocation to the game through Steam? My computer has 16GB of RAM. My original method tends not to work on Steam purchased games as Steam fails to recognize the exe after I alter it with the program I used to use, though the name of the program eludes me right now since I have not used it for years.

 

3. Are there any guides on how to use the game editors that come with Twilight of the Arnor? I have seen some threads but the people who reply to them actually do not answer the original posters question/s and/or assume they already know how files, data, modding, etc... works and the Original poster is left dumbfounded. For example, they say to open a Tech Tree file in IE or something, but do not say how it relates to the Tech Tree editor, or what they have to actually do with it.

I am VERY interested in using such tools to make my own Tech Tree/Race/Improvement mods, particularly adding more research lines to pursue in relation to Soldiering, Weapons, Defenses, etc... for example, for soldiering you would have to research Training(Basic, Advances, Elite, Master) as well as equipment (Troop Armor, Weapons, Equipment, Ground Vehicles, etc...) with each tech improving your soldiering slightly or granting other bonuses.

 

4. Finally, is it possible to use more than one mod at a time with Galactic Civilization II? Just wondering.

First of all, welcome to the community! The forums are not as active as they used to be, but there is usually at least someone around, who can help you out.

1. There are currently four mods, with the main purpose of fixing the bugs and the AI problems:

- MarvinKoshs's Space Weapons Fix Mod was the first one to address the issues. While the AI does a good job in this mod, I don't think it is well suited for a new player, as it deviates quite a lot from the base game.

- The second one is Tolmekian's TechTree Fix. For the most part, it is quite close to the base game, but certain areas (especially weapons) are different. It shouldn't be that hard for a new player to adjust, however.

- The next one is my own work, Autumn Twilight. In addition to the bugs, I also address balance and lore issues. It shouldn't be that hard to get into. However, I haven't fully adjusted the AI, so I can't really recommend it just yet.

- The newest addition is MabusAltarn's Polished Twilight of the Arnor. It is just a bugfix mod. So, for anyone who just wants the bugs fixed, this is definitely the best choice among the four.

2. Deactivating cores will have no effect on OOMs. I don't have the Steam-version, but it should be possible to play GalCiv outside of Steam. If it is possible, you can use this little programm to modify the exe.  Just make sure, that you modify the correct one (Twilight.exe in Galactic Civilizations II - Ultimate Edition\Twilight).

3. I don't know of any tutorials or guides for the editors. The last time I used them was either shortly before or after TotA came out of beta. As I recall, the editors are pretty straightforward, so it shouldn't be hard to figure out how they work. Still, I prefer to modify the xml-files directly, using Notepad++. I find it easier that way. Only making custom maps, and maybe scenarios, would require the editors.

4. Depends on the kind of mod. If both add new graphics or modify different files, no problem. If they modify the same xml-files, however, then no. At least, not without merging the files, but that could defeat the purpose of the mods and you would have to choose which changes to keep.

Hey again, thanks for the friendly welcome.

I just got a hold of Kohryu's Merged Mod from the Steam Forums, which is apparently a merger of the Tech and Space Weapon fixes.

 

As for the editor, I just got into the Tech Tree editor again and it does indeed seem rather straightforward despite it's lack of instructions, but I have found some strange things occurring. I added my Combat Training Tech's - Basic, Advanced, Elite and Master Training, but it would not let me add Interstellar Warfare as a prerequisite, which simply does not show up in the list of Tech's. In addition, the Advanced Extreme Planet Colonization tech's have for some reason jumped out of their original place on the tree as a two part tech and are now on their own at the bottom of the tech tree. Any idea why that might have happened? Or how I can put them back where they were.

 

Thanks for the info on the cores and mod compatibility. Also, i forgot to mention I was running the HD texture mod, i deactivated it and the game does not run out of memory anymore, though the Drengin remain just as annoying with their supernatural ability to spawn fleet upon fleet each turn. Add to that I'd just made peace with them while getting them to make peace with my allies as well. Someone else, who was an ally to the Drengin apparently, declared war on one of my allies the next turn, which put me at war with the Drengin again the next turn... damned alliances...

It's why I nerfed their Super Dominator corvettes.  Not only do the default corvettes cost a fair bit in maintenance, they also give the Drengin a false sense of security and so they slack off on weapons research.

'Interstellar Warfare' is the Display Name of 'Galactic Warfare' in some of the tech trees. You should find it under its Internal Name (Galactic Warfare) in the editor.
The requirements for the Extreme Colonization techs are set in the individual tech trees. The editor must have accidentally removed them, which means, that the techs use the standard requirements from the TechTree.xml again. The most time intensive solution would be to manually set the requirements back to what they were. If the Colonization techs were the only ones affected, then this shouldn't be too hard. If not, then you're best off replacing the file. In any case, you will probably need the Galactopedia. It can show you all of the individual tech trees in the game, and more. I don't know, if it works with the Steam-version, but I see no reason why it shouldn't.

The Drengin get the Super Dominator Corvettes each time they enter a war, not each turn. The amount of Corvettes is based on the overall military strength of the Drengin. The more powerful they are, the more ships they get.

Thanks for the info in regards to the editor, i will get right on that. So far I've added Troop Training and Equipment research branches and an Advanced Tools Branch for production. Though they are themed after my custom civ, i will probably add such branches to the other races at some point.

Any tips on how I might reunite the extreme planet colonization tech's? below is a screenshot of the entry in the tech tree, see anything unusual there?

It's probably a result of merging two different techtree mods.  It's not just the individual tech trees that have been modded, but also the main TechTree.xml which contains the techs common to all races.

At present the advanced level of the colonisation techs are set to require 'AdvancedColonization' which does not exist in any of the racial tech trees.

You'd be better off picking one of the mods and working from there, in my opinion.

Hmm, I just tried the Tech Tree fix mod by itself and it wont let me use custom tech tree's, not even with custom races, i just get a crash when a new game tries to start. Drat.

 

I thought it might have been because the mod uses a new set of modified TechTree files in the mods own directory, but I tried making a new Tech Tree, that was actually just a copy of a pre-existing factions Tech Tree just renamed, and it still crashed.

 

Anyone got any idea's why that might have happened?

 

I don't want to use the Weapon Fix mod because the comments on it denote that the AI's become ridiculously hyper-aggressive for no reason.

Not really.  No more than usual, anyway.  At the very start there's very little aggression because nobody has any military power.  However, yes, a number of races are set to the Terran AI which builds lots of ships.  You do need to have a military to stay alive, but you have plenty of opportunity to be first in the arms race.

When changing between mods you need to clear out (or back up) the raceconfigxml files for the existing races from your save game folder.

I cant find a save game folder, but I do see the custom race xml files in the MyDocuments/MyGames directory. Do you mean I have to, like, delete them or something? Because that would suck.

 

EDIT: I tried deleting the custom faction and making a fresh version, and applying a new custom tech tree to it, and the game crashed again. The only change I made to the Tech Tree was that I added a new Tech with the GalacticWarfare tech as it's prerequisite.

You don't have to delete your custom races, but you may have to adjust them by hand (use an XML editor or Notepad, they're just text) according to the mod you're using.  Specifically, if your race has a list of techs that it gets at the start, those start techs might not be valid.  I don't think that's what is crashing the game, but what could be a problem is if the mod and your custom tech tree create a circular dependency.  What I mean by that is that Tech C requires Tech B which requires Tech A, and Tech A requires Tech C.  That would cause a crash.

You can create a backup folder for races inside your My Games/GC2TwilightArnor folder which will eliminate them for the purposes of testing.  This will help to figure out what's causing the crash (or what isn't causing it).

Could you please post the contents of the Debug.err file? There is usually a indicator in it for why the game crashes.

v1 Fixes numerous issues throughout all tech trees that prevented certain techs from being researched. Also fixes some planetary improvements and UP issues.

MarvinKosh was right, there is definitely something wrong with the custom races. Move all of the .raceconfigxml files out of the My Documents\My Games\GC2TwilightArnor folder and see if the games runs normally. If it doesn't, remove the RaceConfig.xml file from the mod (Tolmekian's TechTree Fix v3-0 Smart Old Minors\Data).

As soon as the game runs normally, move one file after the other back in place, until the game keeps crashing again. That way we can find out which file is bugged and possibly fix it.

It already runs normally, it's only when I use an edited TechTree that it crashes. No disrespect, you're trying to help and all, but where you guys reading what I wrote earlier?

 

My custom race, and the custom races I have the AI use, run fine even with the mod active, it's when I apply an edited TechTree to anything that causes it to crash.

 

I even took an existing TechTree and simply renamed it, and it still crashed the game when I tried to use it. It seems that merely attempting to use an edited Tech Tree is causing the crash, and it only happens with this mod.

If the edited tech tree is the cause of the crash, then it is likely, that something went wrong during the editing. There is also a possibility that the editor made some changes while saving the file, and you can't fix those using the editor. It is probably best, if you just upload the file and I will take a look at it myself.

Simply renaming the file doesn't turn it into a new tech tree. You also need to change the Internal_Name within the file (you would need to use a text editor for this). Without this change, the game still thinks, that it is the same tech tree as before. It doesn't lead to a crash, however, so that isn't the cause.

I agree with the assessment above because if you look closely there are five debug messages related to race creation - specifically, looking to see if there are any custom races to throw into the game.  But at the point where you would usually see this...

There also the often-repeated message Debug Message:  Tried to enter unprintable character: 8 to consider.  I think this means that the game is trying to read characters that shouldn't be used in the XML files.  So a look at your custom race XML file would be handy too.

After trying multiple mods, I decided to switch back to the merged mod(which was previously working perfectly even with my custom Tech's) but to my surprise I now find the Tech Tree is filled with bizzare entries that should not be there. I feel my switching between mods may be somehow causing havoc to the tech tree's, so im considering reinstalling the game for a blank slate before trying again to see if that lets me use my custom Tech's without errors.

 

When switching mods, is there anything I need to "clean up" so to speak?

Switching between mods shouldn't cause this, as long as they are properly installed and have no errors. Most of the mods are just xml files. They are just read by the game and can't change other files. Only an error in the file itself could cause such problems.

Well before you go uninstalling GC2, check to see if the game runs fine without mods on.  Save yourself quite a bit of time. :)

Switching between mods without starting a new game might cause weirdness.  You might also be better off installing mods to the My Games\GC2TwilightArnor\Mods folder.

I already did, and somehow an edited Tech Tree is now working with the Weapons Fix mod. However, the thing with the two ranks of Advanced Extreme Planet colonization have divided again, despite this not happening when I used the Weapon Fix mod before.(it was Tech Tree Fix that originally did this.)

 

I will continue to try to take it further to see anything happens again, though I'd still like to know how to merge the two Extreme Planet Colonization Tech's again. Can this be fixed in my custom races own TechTree file? Or do I have to edit some kind of universal "basic Tech's" file that all races use?

You need a tech with the internal name 'AdvancedColonization' in your tech tree.  The main TechTree.xml file should have it already costed and stuff, you just need to set the prerequisite tech to unlock it.

Basically, racial tech trees (e.g. Zylon Tech Tree.xml) don't grab techs from the TechTree.xml unless there's at least a <Tech Name ="TechNameHere"> (sorry if I mangled the syntax) included in the file.

In-game there is already an Advanced Colonization Tech, The first tier of Extreme Planet Colonization tech's are attached to this Advanced Colonization Tech in-game, yet the Advanced versions are by themselves, yet are listed in the Tech Tree editor as having the first tier of Colonization Tech's as their prerequisites, i cant think of a logical reason for them to be separate, if the editor says they should go after their prerequisites, why dont they?
