invasions require...

I'm on my second game and wondering about invasions. As I understand it, in order to take over another inhabited planet from another civ, I need

- the planetary invasion tech

- a transport ship (tech required?)

- soldiers to fill the ship (tech?)

- the ability to wipe out any orbiting defense force at the target planet

Once I have all of the above, can the defending planet keep me from taking over by, say, having a defense force on the planet or some defensive building?

You've basically got it, but soldiers and population are the same, so no special soldiers are needed.

There are defensive buildings possible, but they only help the defenders in odds.  Once you get some Invasion tech gains, you will also get offered different ways to conduct each invasion.  There are some other things that also boost your soldiers' odds, including one trade good building ("Tir Quan" traning academy or something like that).

Just be prepared to bring more loaded transports for higher pop planets.

By default though, the basic Planetary Defence structures are useless (they doesn't have the modifier it should have).

Transports are based on the cargo hull, which requires no research.  It's the troops module that requires research.
