SoaSE newbie lf advice

During Steam's massivle holiday blowout I saw that SoaSE:Trinity ( and Rebellion ) were both on sale. I bought Trinity since it was the cheaper option and because Rebellion says its standalone so I don't feel a need to buy it until I am sure I like SoaSE.

I have played other space 4x games in the past, although much older ( like Masters of Orion II: Battle at Antares, Stars! ) as well as earth based empire games like the Civilization series for the PC

I'm a complete noob to this game though and was wondering if any veterans could point to a really awesome guide / video to show me the ropes so to speak since it has been a long time since I played an in-depth 4x game [ Civ series has become dumbed down over time in my opinion ]

I wish you would have posted sooner. I think Rebellion is the better deal as it has everything, so if you do like it, you have the difficult choice of whether to "Upgrade" or not.

I just wrote this guide for Rebellion, but except for some of the new units in the unit FAQs and the custom map I linked I think it all holds true to trinity. Otherwise, just browse through the strategy section of this website, lots of good tips there.

Doh. I didn't realize Rebellion contained Entrenchment and Diplomacy. Fail on my part. However, I must point out that I hadn't had a reason to post here before so ;P

At least Trinity didn't cost much and maybe Steam will give me a refund if I claim an accidental purchase of the wrong game since they both were on sale at the same time.

If not, it isn't a big deal as trinity only cost me $6.79

For an additional $10.23 I also picked up both 'Gal Civ I and II's Ultimate Edition' and 'Star Ruler' .. like I said. DARN SALES. I have played a few games on Gal Civ II, but I sucked pretty bad.

Anyways, based on your recommendation I just went ahead and grabbed Rebellion while it is on sale for $13.59.  Here is to hoping Steam gives me the refund I requested. If they even do grant it I am sure they would just stick the funds into my Steam Wallet, buts thats ok I guess.. can always buy a diff game.

To be clear, Trinity contains 3 Separate games, each adding additional units and gameplay. Rebellion is all units and game play in one game, plus more.

If you can get Rebellion, you should because the others are obsolete once you have that. I would say the one reason to get Trinity at this point is if you want to ease into the additional Units and gameplay. It also makes more sense to learn factions pre-Rebellion since they Split; helps you understand how to use them before layering the factional 'Flavors' on top,

Late to the party, my post right above yours says I went ahead and grabbed Rebellion.. \o/

wish me luck on getting the refund for Trinity :\

edit update : Steam did honor my refund request since it was my first one ever. So Yay

I still haven't actually played a game of SoaSE yet though, lol.

So I finally got around to playing through the Tutorials to try and gain a basic grasp of the game and I also wactched a couple of LP? videos on Youtube.

Once I had finished the generic Tutorials I had intended to pay GoaFan77's custom mod for further learning the ropes..... However, I have a problem that makes me not want to play.

I am having lot of trouble with zooming in ( to get a better view of ships and battles ) and also zooming back out ( so I can see the various planets near me ).

My mouse wheel seems to not zoom in and out for some reason ( I don't have a fancy mouse its just a standard Digital Mouse with Left button, Wheel, Right Button  )

Anyone have any suggestions on what to do to fix, or workaround this issue? Even the tutorials were a pain with zooming being such a pain.

** Yes I am aware there are keyboard buttons to zoom with but it is really a pain to use them as it tends to zoom in too far, or out too far. Like I said, it made the tutorials frustrating for me.

Holding Shift while zooming lets you zoom in smaller increments. I remember seeing an option to control zoom sensitivity as well, try playing with that.

You can also press tab to switch between galaxy view and gravity well view, if I recall correctly

Thanks u2 ^

However, I am still curious as to why the mouse won't scroll in and out. It worked fine for me on World of Warcraft ( I quit in November )

It should work just fine. Check your mouse driver is up to date.

You might also try opening a ticket with [email protected] see if they have any resolutions.

Definitely sounds like a mouse driver issue, or perhaps your mouse wheel just chose this moment to die? Can you scroll webpages, like this website? If not, it's time to get a new mouse. If you can, then it's time to find up to date drivers for your mouse.

You can get a decent mouse and keyboard set for under $20 if you order from some place online like Newegg. If you go to a physical store, you'll get raked over the coals, as I discovered recently when I stepped on my mouse and broke it (don't ask) and needed an immediate replacement (I run a business out of my home, so it's not like I can just shut the computer off and not play games for a few days waiting for a shipment). RadioShack wanted $58 to replace the mouse I had with a slightly inferior product when I could have ordered it for $15 online (and did, eventually, because I disliked the replacement... I still have it for a backup in case I do something stupid like step on my mouse again... don't ask).

This. Also, did you check your ingame settings? Did you accidentally lower zoom sensitivity for example?

Yes I can, only SoaSE is having trouble.

Then it's a driver issue, almost certainly. I don't know your level of technical expertise, so forgive me if I'm telling you things you already know, but drivers are bits of software that instruct the computer/OS on how to interface with bits of hardware. Usually, a mouse, for example, will work with the OS in general with generic drivers, but it may not work with some programs, such as Sins. You can get current drivers from the mouse manufacturers website, usually in a product support section. The model of your mouse is most likely labelled on its underside, somewhere.

There is another slim possibility that, assuming you are using a version of Windows, your Windows mouse settings are set NOT to allow third party programs to use custom mouse key/wheel layouts.

Maybe the mouse wheel maps to page up/page down instead of scroll. Try remapping the controls.

First question I have is why would Sins be the only program I've ever used that is having this issue?

Secondly, I can't tell what model this mouse is. It has an HP logo on the top and I sure as heck don't see a model number  >:( It was a generic mouse that came with a HP PC I bought several years ago. No longer have that PC [ HP's suck.. ] but I do still use the mouse. -_-

There is some very faint wording on the upper top of the bottom side so if that is where the model number was then I'm screwed because its too worn down to read ( lol )

If it's wireless, check the battery compartment, if it uses a mouseball(Do those even exist anymore?)  Take the ball out and look in that compartment.  If all else fails, look at the base of the cord(If not wireless) it may be printed there for some god-awful reason.  If it's not in one of those places, it's probably those faded words you saw.

-Huzzah!

EDIT:  Also, if you know how to navigate your computer using only a keyboard, try opening the devices and printers folder in your control panel, then unplug the mouse and see which one disappears.  The model number should be listed there once you determine which item it is.  (You may have to restart your computer for it to register the mouse again in some circumstances.)

Not to be rude but,,, nice to see you actually read all of the posts. See below

The word digital is incorrect there though - it is an optical mouse.

As far as wireless, I don't ever use wireless. I tried a wireless keyboard and mouse setup a few years ago. Worst experience ever - wireless devices can have their signals interfered with far too easily.

I had already tried unhooking and reconnecting the mouse. However the only thing it says is ' HID-compliant mouse '

Overall I gave up on finding specific drivers. HP is notoriously bad about using crappy parts from random companies. It can be nigh impossible to track down specific drivers for anything that comes with an HP ( with the exception of the more important components such as the Video Card, CPU, and Ram ). I am glad I had a system custom built for me in 2009 to get rid of that HP [ i passed it down to my girlfriend since it was better than her old one ].

** Anyways, no more discussion on the mouse issue. Just SoaSE strategical information please :

I was going to say that: HP OEM (original equipment manufacturer) hardware is notoriously bad and hard to find model numbers for, as HP doesn't let the actual manufacturer put that information on and instead hides an HP part number somewhere instead (often internally). My advice, buy a better mouse from Logitech or Microsoft (I'm really partial to Microsoft hardware, they're really good at it - surprisingly). There are other manufacturers, of course, and many of them are quite good, but with those two you can get something inexpensive and good quality without having to mess around with reviews and risk-taking.

Incidentally, I own a small consumer/small-business IT support and computer repair company. I have a hard time letting go when someone's having an issue, especially a hardware issue. :-P

Anyway, all that's what I was going to say, but since we're back on strategy only now... um... So, how about them TEC Rebels, huh? Great season they're having... :digichet:

Right, wish I could afford to get a new one - I am disabled but I have no monthly income because the Social Security people are douchebags and try to deny your claim no matter what. Complicating my claim is the fact I don't really have a disease[s] that can be seen. I have multiple auto-immune type disorders ( Fibromyalgia, Psoriatic Arthritis, Raynaud's disease, and Sjogren's Syndrome ) Not to mention the chronic pain, fatigue, insominia, depression, etc etc that seems to accompany those listed conditiions

That was pretty much it.  Who reads every word in every post?  I read the OP and skimmed the rest looking to see if the questions were answered and caught onto another one, so I answered it.  You seemed like you were annoyed that I didn't see that one little word in a post near the top of the page...

I sympathize, I have a variation on fibromyalgia myself (as do my mother and my grandfather), but fortunately it only flares up from time to time. Right at the moment, however, I'm pretty much down for the count with gallstone-induced cholecystitis and secondary chronic pancreatitis. I'm waiting to get my gallbladder taken out and I've had to cut my work hours down as much as possible due to pain induced fatigue.

As a small business owner, I don't have insurance and I'm dealing with applying for Medicaid to cover the surgery. It's not been fun. I feel for you.

I applied for SSI in November of 2009. They denied me. I appealed the decision. I did not get my appeal hearing in front of an Administrative Law Judge until April 26th 2011. The judge didn't officially deny my claim until August 15th. I appealed the decision so the Appeals Council would review it. My case wasn't reviewed until last month.

The Appeals Council ruled that the judge ignored substantial evidence as well as made the ruling without the input of Vocational experts [ which is supposed to be required ]. However, instead of just approving my claim, the Appeals Council decided to kick my case back down for a new hearing. It is possible it could even be in front of the same incompetent Judge - I hope not though.

What is even worse about my issue?  In January of last year the state that I live ruled that I am disabled and granted me Medicaid. They denied my original application but I appealed of course. I then had an appeals hearing with the Medicaid ALJ . This judge ruled in my favor and agreed that I am disabled.

So..... The Medicaid ALJ had exactly the same medical records as the S.S ALJ in order to make a determination... yet I got two different ruling outcomes - makes total sense right? I am disabled but I am not? >:(

At the risk of being a completely insensive jerk:  get a job.

Our country is going bankrupt right now.  When it does there won't be any money for anyone.  At all.  You'll be left with what you yourself can produce by your own hands.  Depending on government is the path to slavery and to undoing our way of life.

Now that I've said that.... ya TEC Rebels are great, I've recently given up on Vasari (used to play them exclusively) and I've grown quite fond of the TEC Rebel.  Maybe's its their titan, maybe it's their sweet Truce Among Rogues (one of the best tecs in the game for econ and expansion).  I love being in an econ spot, I can get a good feeding econ going then send a single colonizer to whatever planet is closest to an ally in need and start spamming a fleet right on top of a key point.  Has turned several games to our favor.

Wow - someone is a presumptuous jerk. You don't and can't understand what it is like for people that have chronic illnesses that leave them in pain every minute of their waking life? Do you think WE WANT this?

Personally, I am on over 2000 dollars a month of prescription medications and even that isn't enough. Both my rheumatologist and neurologist believe that they can't do much more for me than try to alleviate a very small portion of the pain - and as I get older it will get worse as the psoriatic arthritis continues to cripple my joints. I will never be able to get married to my g/f because it would take away my medical coverage. I won't have children because I don't want to raise a kid who will be teased and bullied because their family is poor. I won't ever get to own a home because SSI doesn't pay out enough.

Frankly, I think you deserve to be banned from these forums for that kind of comment - it is just about as bad as being racist or sexist.
