Mods not working for me

Hello,

I have tried to install and use two different mods, but neither of them are working.

1) I created a Mods folder in the main game directory, as the folder did not already exist.

2) I installed the mods into the folder (female henchmen and the larger maps mods)

3) I had already turned on the Use Mods option, but when that did not enable either mod, I turned it off, restarted game, and turned it back on, and restarted game.

And still I get no female henchmen and I cannot create a random XL or XXL map nor can I create a map of those sizes in the workshop.

Am I missing a step not listed above as being taken already?

Game version is 1.1 and is directly from Stardock (as in not the Steam version).

Anyone able to help?
