Lumia 920–Best Smartphone I Have Owned

Lumia 920–Best Smartphone I Have Owned

Before I left on vacation I went and bought myself a late birthday present which was the Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone running Windows Phone 8.  It was a decision between the iPhone 5 and the Lumia 920.  I’ve mostly used iPhones over the past few years, but I did have a Windows Phone 7 device as well.  I liked it, but too many quirks made me return to the iPhone.

I’ve been watching closely the progress of Windows Phone 8, and between that and the hardware from Nokia, I decided to take another plunge into Windows Phone.  I’m certainly glad I did.

lumia920

Most of the quirks I had with Windows Phone 7 were resolved in WP8, and the hardware side is so much better than the iPhone at half the price (on contract).  The device is bigger than the iPhone with a beautiful 4.5” display.  Some reviewers like to point out the 920 is “big”, but that’s a plus in my book as the larger screen area is much easier on the eyes.

I’ll go into Windows Phone 8 in another article, but it’s no problem for me to say this is much better than the stale iOS platform.  Live Tiles are a great feature, integration with Office and SkyDrive is done right, and overall it’s a smooth experience.

I’ve only had it a short time, so I’ll keep writing about it, but if you are in the market for a new smartphone, give this one a look.

I always used to swear by Nokias (I've owned like 10 of them since 1998.......so many not because they were crap/broken, but because I loved the "next best thing")

I'll def consider going back to Nokia after my HTC bites the dust, because buying it right now would be doing it only because I want a new phone....

The only reason I have a landline phone is for our alarm system, otherwise that would be gone in a second.

I used to keep the land line to call the folks in the US (it was still cheaper than the cell at the time).......skype took away that reason easily! :banhammer:

So, I've been following this thread.  I'm free to buy a new phone in January (contract up).  I'm considering getting a 920.  I have an iphone 4.  I love it (jailbroken).  I have an ipad, so I don't technically need an iphone, but I dig it.  Anyone able to steer me over the top either way?  I was decided on an iPhone 5.  Now I'm in limbo.  Anyway, read everything here, but would love to hear more praises or condemnations to help me make a decision.  I'm changing cell providers, so I might actually pick this up before my contact expires on another provider.  Thanks.

The most critical thing to me is having a working (CONFIRMED) sirius app.  I have a "kinda" confirmation so far.  After that, its knowing if there is a modding community so that there might be customizable mods. I'd also love to be able to tether without paying extra.  If I can magically get all of those, I'm sold on the 920.

Anyway, I'm middle of the fence. Help pacov, plz.

I heard this phone has issues with Gmail. What kind of smartphone is it that can't even use Gmail?

You "hear" a lot of things don't you?  Ever actually put yourself in the position of being the one to do/try something and then post your own findings?  Or are you just one of those people who continuously post and re-post something you heard somewhere?    At the very least citing sources for things heard would help? O:)

@pacov

I still haven't confirmed that app as working for one's SIRIUS subscription.  I am still trying to find someone I know who has a subscription so I can test it with my phone.  I'll let you know if I can confirm it working for you.

The tethering works for me without paying extra, but then I'm probably not the best person to test this for you as I have a "special" plan with my provider.

As far as "modding" goes for WP8, you'd probably be better off to check the forums at Windows Phone Central (www.wpcentral.com) for info regarding that.

Just another attempt to egg me on and anger me. So be it. Island Dog posted on Facebook the other day about how this phone does not like Gmail due to the disputes going on between MS and Google. As for myself I have never owned a smartphone. Too rich for my blood.

First, there is a rather large difference between something not liking something and having issues with it.

Second, how about reading articles like the following: http://www.wpcentral.com/google-problem-windows-phone before re-posting something you don't appear to fully understand.

Lastly, re-posting perceived issues (as you see them) with/about devices you openely admit to not even having a desire to own (even if you could) and treat with scorn anyway makes you not much more than a troll.

Yet your the one that chooses to continue to instigate the issues. Interesting. You could have explained to me how I was wrong in a more nicer tone and I would have accepted it and apologized. I'll be ignoring you for awhile.

iPhone5 being offered by WalMart @ $127 with 2-yr contract.  I think (but don't know) you can choose AT&T, Verizon or Sprint.

Google is indeed ending support for ActiveSync, which causes some issues with Google's mail service (Push, Calendar). Fortunately with Nokia phones you can use syndicated email retrieval and then it won't effect you, or be even smarter and start using a better service for email than "The Ever Reading Eye"-Google.

Another good reason to dump Google services.

Nothing wrong with Google services. Have you even tried using a Android based phone yet Island Dog?

Have you?  Oh wait.....no......"As for myself I have never owned a smartphone. Too rich for my blood. ".    I am curious.  What would ID answering your question do for you today?  Perhaps convince you to go out and actually buy one?

Seriously kona, what's in these "trolling attempts" for you?  Do you get some kind of kick out it?  I am curious after all......

Evidence suggests you are the only one trolling here. You haven't been here long enough to understand how I come across or how I act on the boards. Ask some old timers. They will say it's just me being me. Now as I said before I will go about ignoring you since you just don't get it.

Android sucks and is a generic OS, but of course that's just my personal opinion.

I'M the one trolling?  Was that you who entered into this thread and posted helpful info for people considering this phone?  Was it you who posted a lengthy hands-on with the device in question and continues to seek to confirm info for those asking for it?  No.......guess again.....troll.

ah, the good old times.

but you are right, the_Monk should really read some old posts of you to see how your character is.

here's a particulary nice thread. kona was bragging about his great (imaginary) Mac for a few days. offers to make some screenshots to show how it looks, but claims not to know how to do it, so unfortunately there would be none. people explain him how to do a screenshot. kona decides his Mac is crap and has to be sold tomorrow. no screenshots.

https://forums.wincustomize.com/48251/page/5/#265434

it's kinda funny and sad at the same time, because all these days he was bragging pretty much everybody except himself knew that he never owned a Mac. ;)

Exactly, thanks.

I recall that thread. That was when I owned that old G4 tower. I really did own a Mac. Just didn't know how to post a screen shot. Sold it because I wanted to go back to Windows.

the_Monk is a good guy.  Opinionated perhaps (who's not?), but good.  So is Kona.  Neither is a troll or threat to civility, and I trust will not become such.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

for once, ID and I agree on something.

as for kona saying he's just being kona, he's right. he argues about most anything without any personal knowledge of the subject.

as for the phone......well, let's just say i've spoken to a nokia rep and i now know what i need to do in order to get the phone calendar to suffice for me. i have her number and when i get another 920 tomorrow, we'll see what happens. regarding the bank app, hopefully they develop one soon but i'm not holding my breath.

A mobile banking app has saved my bacon on more than one occasion.  Wouldn't go without it now.

I guess that's a matter of personal preference. C|net has released its list of best phones of 2012 and its no surprise that my Galaxy S3 and your Nokia 920 both made the list. I liked the Note 2, but it was so large that it was totally obnoxious.
