Start8 1.09 BETA Now Available

The Start8 1.09 beta is now available with new features and improvements!

Check out the full change log below:

- NEW! Folders pinned to the Start Menu allow you to view the first X items as a jumplist

- NEW! Custom places locations.(Add a dropbox location for example).

- NEW! Improved "Go straight to desktop" on login feature

- NEW! UI supports translation via lng files. See \lang\en.lng file for info.

- Added rename support in the tree

- Added drag & drop including rearranging items in the all programs tree

- Search box now allows %appdata%

- Tweaks to "Search" to reduce memory usage slightly

- Performance enhancements in the all programs tree to work around a flaw in Windows Defender

- Resolved a problem with the Start Menu position when the taskbar was on the right and there is a docked app

- "Send to sub menu" now allowed on the tree right click menu

- Tree now includes hidden items

- When using the search box to view folders, the performance is now improved

- "Places" menus no longer select the first entry

- Option to make "Places" list entries and take less room, thus allowing more to show in less space

- Rearranging pinned shortcuts is now faster

- "Recent Items" list no longer includes folders

- Deleting an item from the "All Programs" list will delete it instantly from the tree vs waiting until the next refresh

- Fixed issue with Putty and jumplist not showing blank entries which did not launch the right things

- Fixed issue with Live Photo Gallery not opening images up in preview mode

- Added registry key option to hide tooltips in the Start Menu. This is HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8\HideTips = 1

when dragging an item with the right mouse key, the context menu after dragging is very short (1 option), normally there are 4.

Will this be fixed in the next version?

Kudos for trying

If you enter %appdata% in the search field the search results shows you the folder and if you press enter it opens the folder.

Are you sure you are not making a typo?

no im not making a typo ive tried it multiple times instead it just opens some random text document nothing to do with that

There seems to be some confusion over the version number with this beta. The original v1.09 beta actually shows as v1.1, presumably v1.10, beta and this one, despite being referred to as v1.09.2 beta, actually shows as v1.1 beta 2 in Start8's config About menu!!!

So which is it?

Yeah, I have been confused, too.

Unfortunately the stardock server side configuration cannot handle there being multiple same numbered versions so betas of 1.1 are shown as 1.09. As it is the beta of 1.1 the Start8 configuration correctly shows it was 1.1 BETA 2 because that is what it is, the second beta for 1.1. The final release will show as 1.1 on the website as 1.1 and 1.1 in the application, this only impacts betas.

This seems like a bug. I get this occasionally (cant right click on computer etc), usually after resuming from standby. A reboot or waiting 10 mins seems to fix it.

I have seen this happen on my computer also with the latest version of Start8.

At random times I can not right click on "Computer" and then like you said maybe after 10 minutes or so it stars working.

Hopefully this bug will be fixed in the next update.

Hi devs,

Thank you for your hard work on this product and actually reading all these bug reports / requests.

There is one new feature with this beta that i dont like : show hidden items !

I tend to hide stuff in my startmenu like the maintenance folder, wich is empty anyways, the tabletpc folder, also empty and some other folders to.

Guess what, they are all back ! Do I delete them now if i do not want them apearing in the Start8 menu or is there some hidden registry key to reverse this behaviour? Anyways it shows the hidden links Microsoft has put there to, like the hidden All programs link.

So an option to enable ore disable this would be great, or at least provide a reg key for the 'die hards'.

Found a bug after try it.

it will pop a error window after click space in advances settings , and it can't be closed.

I'm also having the same issue with the computer context menu not working. Also when restarting or booting into Windows 8 Pro 64-bit when I bring up Start8 my user picture will appear for a split second at the top of the desktop above the Start8 UI?
