Goodfellow Goes South

Marc Goodfellow has today signed a two and a half year contract with Second Division Bristol City, two days after being given permission to talk to the club.
The Goodfellow transfer saga has been going on for some months now, with Bristol City desperate to take the young striker to the south of England.

Goodfellow is a product of Stoke's youth policy, an extremely quick left footed striker. He made his mark on his 19th Birthday, when, making his debut, The Potters played Premiership outfit Charlton Athletic in the League Cup. That night, Stoke won 2-1, with Goodfellow scoring what proved to be a decisive goal in the outcome of the two-legged affair.
As a result, Goodfellow was tracked by several clubs initially, but interest appeared to wane as he slowly lost his place in the first team.
Under Steve Cotterill and later Tony Pulis, the Stoke management decided to try and convert Goodfellow into a left winger, in a similar mould to that of current wing-wonder Peter Hoekstra. The move initially appeared to be tactical genius, as Goodfellow made excellent rapid progress. But once Kris Commons and Hoekstra were fully fit, Goodfellow became surplus to requirements and only ever made the fringes of the first team.
Goodfellow leaves behind him several excellent years at the Britannia, one that many fans will look back on as ultimately disappointment. Yet again Stoke have committed the sin of letting a player of great potential and promise to leave the club.
