Proposed Map Pack

Proposed Map Pack

Your thoughts here

Hi all. I noticed quite a few people agreeing with me in the announcement thread, so i thought it might be worth seperating off into a new discussion.

https://forums.elementalgame.com/436082

Stardock is planning to release a map pack for FE soon, and apparently going to use it as a factor in judging future DLC releases.

My opinion, which quite a few others shared, is that a pack of premade maps isn't a very suitable DLC for this kind of game. I have a strong respect for stardock, and a desire to support them, but this kind of DLC wouldn't interest me, and it'd be a shame if lack of interest in this product were taken to mean a lack of interest in FE DLC as a whole.

I feel that one of the main draws of FE is Discovery. Each new game is a new, random world, with new things to find, and see, and do. The randomness is one of the core aspects as, aside from a few broad rules that shape the world, you don't know what to expect. There are a few premade maps already with the game, and i for one have never touched them. Though i'm sure they're beautiful and well designed, a premade experience just doesn't interest me.

Personally i feel that the sort of DLC this game needs, is more pieces to throw into the random generator. New equipment, new quests, new locations, new monsters, new map features, new wildlands, etc. More tools that can be used by the random algorithms to create a wider varietyof worlds, and less repetition. I feel that offers a far better value for developer effort put in, and thus replayability for the end user.

Please do post here your thoughts on the upcoming DLC, and what kinds of (presumably paid) DLC you'd like to see

I play the game because it's fun...why do you play games?

We all enjoy playing the game for various reasons. We shouldn't be fighting over something silly like the reasons we enjoy the game. We should be working towards making it better for all of us.

That's my point. Once you can beat a game consistently with little effort, it stops being fun.

Nope.  One thing that you may not understand, and few people seem too, is that what is not fun for one person may actually be fun for someone else.  Egocentrism is the way of the average forum poster.  I don't play games for their challenge.  I think we play games very differently and for different reason, I have never played a game for it's challenge, I play it for the experience of playing a game.  Challenge is only a small part of that experience to me.

It's not a proposed map pack.  It's the first DLC.

If you don't want more crafted maps, don't get it.

That's not a really good answer. This is more akin to 'horse armor', it is a DLC that very few people will care about (since most people prefer playing on random map), and will waste a lot of goodwill from people your company just barely restored.

For 5 bucks... heck, even things like a couple of new weapons or one/two new monster lair type would had been much worthwhile than maps. I will probably buy this map DLC anyway, but not because of the maps themselves (I probably won't play them ever), but to hope you will add more content later on.

But for normal people who has no feeling toward Stardock, this can backfire quite easily.

Eh, forum trogs bitch about DLC and things a large portion of players are perfectly willing and wanting to pay for.  Let them put out the map packs, see how many are sold, learn from it, right or wrong, as Beth did with horse armor and we'll see.

More like most 'normal' people will just skip the DLC altogether and not bother since it is just not worth for 5 bucks, while it creates some more whining on forums. I really don't see any positive outcome other than some bucks being made for it.

Shit, you should see some of the DLC that Paradox put out for CKII.  Makes Horse Armor look like Shivering Isles.  (god that was a nerdy reference)  They sell individual background music, coats of arms, and all types of minor shit.  But then again, it's cheap and their $5 DLC are pretty meaningful...I hate when I try to make a point and in the middle I find a way to argue with myself.

I'm guessing that is how they stay in bussiness and pay the bills ...but I have never claimed to be a normal person so maybe I'm looking at it wrong.

I don't mind them doing a map pack at all, but it really shouldn't be used as a gauge for (good) DLC interest because the two just isn't the same.
