[0.992] Where did my Custom Sovereigns go ?

As usual, I am running a little late ("day late, and a dollar short", as per my regular modus operandi); so I just got around to downloading the v 0.992 update today (Saturday, about Noon, Mountain Standard Time).  Actually I thought that was a prudent move, because I knew that the short-lived v 0.991 micro-update (from a couple days ago) had been partially defective, and caused some folks to experience some new problems that they had never seen before.  So, I really thought that not hurrying to download v 0.992 was probably a sound idea.  (Never be first in line; never be on the "bleeding edge".)

Also, I had been playing a "ripping good game" and was reluctant to lose it.  I knew that typically one cannot resume/reload on-going games, after downloading a new FE update.

So, okay, I was getting eager to see v 0.992, and went after it today.  The download seemed to go smoothly -- about 17 minutes on my less-than-stellar InterNet connection, with perhaps another 3 minutes of patching process.  No Red Flags had been raised ...

I joyously entered the game, and discovered that (of course) my previously saved, on-going game had disappeared.  What I did not expect, is that my four Custom Sovereigns (loving crafted ... and survivors from the last month of play ... unlike some others) had also disappeared!

Now, admittedly, this is not a tragedy.  I will enjoy creating new Custom Sovereigns; and I will probably make them even more fascinating and  *FUN* , this time around.  However, I thought I would post this note, so that other folks will have a chance to get a "heads-up" on this issue.

Also, if there are folks who have not lost their saved Custom Sovereigns, after downloading v 0.992, I would be interested in learning that fact.  I note that there also appeared to be 7 or 8 pre-designed maps that showed up with v 0.992, one of which was given as the default map (which is easily changed).  I don't know what other surprises may await me ... but I think it's time to go look ...    :D

Yes, some updates and any full reinstall will wipe out your custom sov's (and custom Races).  What Derek explained to me, while helping me figure out why I was having trouble with the program, was that old Sov and Race builds can cause the program to have issues.  If you really want to save your custom sov's, they are located in "../My Documents/My Games/Fallen Enchantress/" directory under "Units" and "Races".  It remains to be seen if this issue will continue once the "Gold" game is released.

Hey, thanks for the quick feedback, SciFi1950, and from such a good Source (Kael, himself).

You are right, of course, that it is not only the Custom Sovereigns that have disappeared.  The Custom Races have disappeared as well.  Furthermore, a lot of features have basically been  RESET  with this update.  For example, the downloard of v 0.992 resets the Gaming Options too.  So, for me, particle effects are back, outlines are restored, and Automatic Turn advancement is restored (which takes place as soon as your last unit has moved its limit.)  Depending on how one plays, these  RESETs  may not be noticeable; but for some of us, the changes are kind of important ... or seem to be.

Certainly, it is not illogical for a Major Update to have this sort of major resetting effect (reviving older Default settings).  However, it seems like it has been a while, since an update did all of this.  It caught me by surprise ...      o_O

Yeah, I think they are working on an installer for everybody. The trick was people were having issues with slow downs and other things and they had to recreate the documents folders from scratch for the fix. Hence, when .992 came around I think it just installed right over it to get it work for everyone right out of the box. I expect the same when release comes out.

They were not removed for me. They were copied to this folder (could be diff based on Op. system)

I think you are right, Parrottmath.  That seems to fit what I have observed, and makes sense overall.  Perhaps more importantly, I would bet that you are right, that we can expect the same procedure to be implemented, when the Official Release version comes out on Tuesday, October 23.

Thanks for you input, dangerlinto.  I don't know what to make of your experience, because I don't seem to be able to find the previous Custom Sovereigns and Custom Races anywhere.  It's a curious business ...

On a related note, I tried to recreate one of my favorite Custom Sovereigns, and discovered that I could no longer provide a Backstory for the Sovereign and Race, despite typing one up, in the appropriate place, as instructed.  I noticed that this feature has sometimes worked, but it has often not worked, in the course of the last several updates.  It is pretty annoying to lose the Backstory feature again, when the game is supposedly deep within the period for debugging.  It's supposed to be getting better!   It does kind of make me wonder if Stardock is ever going to get all of pieces of this program to work properly, at the same time ...

In any event, no point in spending a lot of time creating new Custom Sovereigns and races in the next couple days, because they will probably all get wiped out again, on Tuesday.     :|

Of course, there are other things that can (and probably should) be tested; but there sure are days when this business gets frustrating ...     #:(                                                            [ End of Rant:   :)   ]
