"DesktopX.exe has stopped working"

...and they can't tell me why

I've used DesktopX for years now, but suddenly it won't load and all Windows will give me is the cryptic message in the title. I've tried restarting, un/re-installing, opening a .desktop file directly from Windows... none of them work. I'm really starting to miss my themes. Any suggestions? I'm running Windows 7 on a Lenovo v570.

Here's the gobbledygook I captured:

Happens to me every so often. 3 to 4 times a year. It's a PITA.

I usually have to uninstall, run regisrty cleaner, reboot, manually check registry for leftovers, reboot, reinstall. Most of the time it works. When it don't, I restore my daily backup.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

It just happened to Philly a few days ago.

Yes, I just recently had a problem similiar on a Windows 7 computer with DX not opening, but to be honest there was more going on.  It would seem that I had picked up some kind of 'nasty' bug.  It seemed that anything that I tried I got back an error, 'I'm sorry John, I can't let you do that.',  I'm calling it the HAL Syndrome:rofl:

The computer is currently getting fixed (cleaned up).  :sun:

Well, I have tried what you said with no luck. What else should I do? I just don't understand why it would be working one day then not the next! X|

Do you have a system backup? If so, run it. Possibly system restore. Since I do daily backups, I have system restore turned off.

Download Revo Uninstaller (the free version will do). Use it to uninstall DX then have it scan on moderate. When completed, delete anything it marks in bold print. Reboot then re-install DX.

It worked!!!

I've yet to see any software that didn't leave trash behind when uninstalled with Add/Remove Programs.  Revo Uninstaller has always done a good job, so I've stuck with it. ;)

Hello,

Is the trial version of DesktopX file called: "desktopx_public.exe"? Did anyone else see the notice "An unidentified program wants access to your computer" when installing the public (trial)? Is this Stardock's file, and not any trouble, I got the file from Stardock.

If you got it from Stardock, you can trust it. The file name is correct.

Today November 2013, after a Windows update (automatic) it happen again.  "DesktopX.exe has stopped working"

Are you suffering the same? I uninstalled and re-intalled (even uding Revo Uninstaller) but the problem still there. I can't believe it! I will try to install the old version DesktopX Pro 3. Wish me good luck.

[UPDATE] DesktopX 3 Pro install good... runnning GOOD! The problem is that themes made on DesktopX 4 are not working. THe scripts don't run very good. I will try again re-installing 4.x.

[UPDATE] No... it doesn't working any more. Sorry... it seems that we need to say goodbye to this great program.
