Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2751352) may be interfering

Booting to dsektop

This is related to my previous post https://forums.stardock.com/432763. After clean install of Windows 8 RTM; all apps installed with start8 last. PC would boot to desktop; bypassing metro ui. Ran windows update and installed KB 2751352. Rebooted and pc went to metro screen; not desktop as before. This also happened on my pc that was upgraded from windows 7. To test; I uninstalled the update form both pc's, rebooted and right to the desktop. I ran this test 3 times and got the same result. I can't say for sure if this effect of the update is incidental or if it's by design to block start 8. I recall that MS has said they would block attempts to bypass metro ui.

Here's the link for details on Update(KB2751352): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2751352

I have that update on my system but everything is working normally.  The only difference between my setup and what you described is I installed the windows update before I installed Start8.  The update was installed automatically by windows on 9/11/2012.  I installed Start8 for the first time on 9/21/2012.  Maybe you could try uninstalling and re-installing Start8 to see if it clears the problem.

Thanks for the help, bryoncul. I uninstalled Start8; reinstalled the update; rebooted, reinstalled Start8 and rebooted again. Went to straight to desktop; bypassing metro ui. Rebooted 2 more times to verify and so far so good.

We have made some tweaks internally which we think should address this plus the missing start button graphic issue.  We think it was timing related and some machines were just too quick at some things and slower than expected at other things causing those things to happen.
