Memory - 4GB to 6 or 8GB Worth It?

Memory - 4GB to 6 or 8GB Worth It?

I have a Dell XPS 420 with 4GB (4x1) but MB is expandable to 8GB (4x2).  Recently upgraded to Win 7 64 from Vista 32 and am wondering if I would get substantial improvement by going to 8GB. I recently upgraded to a SATA II SSD dedicated to the OS (lovin' that improvement). Thoughts? It would be ~$50 or so to go to 6GB or ~$100 to go to 8GB. I run dual monitors and like to do a little multitasking - playing games (Fallen Enchantress), surfing the web, mail, Excel, youtube and all that jazz on the other. Thanks in advance.

Yes, some fans of the Intel i7, i5 series CPU's will tell you that Intel has faster CPU's than the 8170, and that's true, there are faster some Intel models, but at the same time there's a lot of slower ones as well.

As starkers has stated AMD and Intel both have their pros and their cons. The key for all of this, whether AMD or Intel, nVidia or others, etc is to do your research. Lots of research. If you dig into it enough and get to the core of what honest reviews say about the technologies then you really can't go wrong with either brand as you will have good knowledge of what you are getting yourself into (for better or worse) with what you choose to purchase, whatever it may be.

Thanks for the input, all. It really sounds like the best option is to invest in a new rig by keeping the existing SSD and HDD, and upgrading the case, PSU, MB, processor, RAM & video card. Budget time!  :D

I was really impressed by the previous peformance improvements I got from 1. Vista 32 to Win 7 64 and 2. SSD for boot disk. Kinda bummed it doesn't make sense to go further, at least cost effectively. However, I am happy both of those prior investments can be moved over to the new rig so not all is lost. Thanks again for all the input.
