Quoting starkers, reply 22Are you trying to put words into my mouth?  Large company = Microsoft?  Yes, Microsoft is a large company, but I did not name it as being the instigator of this trend, did I?

 you did.

Quoting starkers, reply 14Yeah, I'll drink to that.  Sadly, since MS went with the flat, lacklustre everything, many other companies have followed suit and have pretty much ruined logos, icons, GUIs... much of what we see on our screens.

i apologize if you were referring to Morgan Stanley here

Connecting the dots, are we?  That was two different posts, and while related topic-wise, they were unrelated n my head.  Had I been thinking Microsoft in the second post I would have named it in the key sentence.

I therefore refer you to this statement....

Quoting starkers, reply 22
My point was that somebody high up the food chain usually/nearly always decides what the rest of we peons want to wear, hear, see, smell, taste.... and like sheep, the majority of the human race has or covets it.

The company could be Apple, it could be Samsung, or even Google.... shoot, it could even be Microsoft, but the point remains, they all want to shape our purchasing needs/habits toward their products.... and by making it fashionable they can even make you want them if you'd ordinarily hate the sight of it... why.?.. to keep up with the f**king Joneses... to be recognised and/or embraced by the in-crowd.  Geez, I hate that sort of shit.

Yes, I'm a cynical, obstinate old bastard, and some might say "f**ked in the head", but it's still my head and my mind's my own.  For instance, I wasn't one of the mindless twerps who queued up outside Apple showrooms for days ahead of the iPhone 5 release....and not because they needed one, either... but off the back of a slick advertising campaign that made it oh so glamorous and a must, must have.  Mindless sheep!

How about coming up with something new and setting a trend instead of following ;)

I agree with starkers. We bought Stardock products to make our desktops diffrent from the one MS wanted us to use! I too in the 60's and 70's wore levi jeans, teeshirts and bikers boots, not to be trendy but because I liked them! I still pick what I want and wear what I want and buy what I want. (metro won't be one of them)

Stardock has the right to make and use what ever logo they want, no matter how flat, boreing and not really all that good looking. If people want to be like lemmings and jump off the rocks with their fellow lemmings, it's their doing and no amount of talking is going to change that!

I'm too damn old to change my spots and not sure I want to change 'em!

Way to go Starkers

Whether or not Stardock's logo is trendy/bland/boring or simply [more accurately] 'corporate' makes diddly-squat impact on the outcome of a possible desktop being "diffrent"...;)

BTW....my favourite jeans are [still] 501s ....no sissy zips ..... I always wear teeshirts and the last boots I bought were Harley Davidson's  [only cos I was in the US]...;p

Edited, didn´t come out like I meant it: -I would like to think think I did. There are many other ways of being New than choice of colors etc.  :sun:

So, OP seems to imply that the Windows era was 2000 to 2011.  Hmmmmm........   Windows-8 panic maybe?

What's next ?

You too, Roger, way to go.... way to go.

Me, I was never one to be told what to do, how or when.... which is probably why one of my teachers reckoned I'd leave school with a backside like leather, from all the canings.  Hehe, I had a whinge to my old man [now he was somebody who could tell me what to do] about a caning I thought was unfair, and he told me that it made up for I deserved but missed out on... then gave me another hiding for whining about it.  Naturally, I never complained at home about the cane at school again.

Anyhow, good on you for going with comfort and preference rather than what fashion dictated.  I wore my fave Levis [3 pairs] for about 25+ years... and then I only stopped because of a surgically induced weight gain, then found some difficulty fitting back into them when back on my feet again.  An ex inherited them sometime before we split, and when we met again 4 or 5 years later she was still wearing them, not that I was surprised... they're the best jeans in the world.

My current jeans are Wranglers and Riders, but I much prefer Levis.  As for the boots, when I was still riding I wore a pair of hand made leather beauties a mate put together for cost, about $45... steel capped, heels reinforced with steel... usually sold for around $350, depending on work/materials involved.  When I couldn't ride anymore I gave 'em to a mate, who's down your way these days, in Melbourne someplace.

They're all fine.

It's just a label. It is the company behind the logo that matters.

Yep, there can be a lot of deep psychology behind correctly branding a company to best express it's intentions.

However at the same time, a strong understanding of both psychology and design can also be used to manipulate people: black magic if you will.  Large organized religions / governments / corporations often subscribe to such practices.  I don't.

You can also choose to just ignore it like myself and a lot of other folks.   Gives us more time for the things that we really enjoy.  :sun:

What I'd like to know is how the name Stardock came about.

Well put.  True freedom is indeed found by liberating ourselves from these influences regardless of circumstance.  Learning to ignore everything and anything is one of life's goals.  However this can require more energy than we are aware, as some environments are much more conducive for growing than others: practically in direct proportion to their simplicity, or lack of distractions.
