Chris Roberts--Star Citizen Updates & Info

Yes, awesome does exist.

Chris Roberts--the primary creator of Games such as Privater, Wing Commander and Freelancer is back in action!.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN:

Welcome!

If you’ve made it here, you probably know who I am. Maybe you have heard of Wing Commander and its sequels, or perhaps Strike Commander, Privateer or Freelancer.

If not, you’re still welcome!

I grew up making video games. I sold my first game at the age of 13 and created Wing Commander when I was 21. But 10 years ago, at the height of my career I took a break. Not because I stopped loving or playing games but because I had become frustrated with the limits of the technology at the time to realize my vision.

I decided to pursue my desire to create detailed worlds and tell sophisticated stories in film.

I always said the moment I became interested in making games again was when I was going to come back.

With the power of today’s computers and the reach of the internet I finally feel I have the tools to build the connected experience that I always dreamed of. A world that would be more satisfying and richer than any film I could work on.

With films you tell stories but with games you create worlds.

If you’ve played my games, you’ll know that’s what I love to do.

I’m here to tell you that I have been working on something for just under a year, something that embraces everything that my past games stood for but takes it to the next level.

I hope you’ll be as excited by it as I am.

My new endeavor is still in its early stages but I invite you to take the journey with me.

If you register below you’ll become an insider that will not only give you early access to the game’s website and forums, but you will also get the opportunity for rewards and privileges that no one else will get. It’s my way of showing how important your early involvement and support is.

The full announcement will be at 10am Eastern Standard Time (UTC -5) on the 10th day of the 10th month of this year.

My name is Chris Roberts.

And if you would indulge me I would like to create a world for you.

The link is here (and "42" is what will get you in if you get stuck).  Go enroll and let this guy know you are interested--this is the original scfi game maker who broke all the rules and did the things no one else would.

I would pay for this game in advance without even knowing what it was.

I believe the link gives you the chance to be an alpha-beta tester for the game during the next two years.  I'd highly recommend it.

I also think it would be fantastic if Stardock and Ironclad sent him a note of support (I'm just sayin'...)

Similar to retired roman legionaries given land in the last country they served?

In the pledge drive, citizenship cards were offered as an incentive to donate.  they are "memorabilia" only.  I do think I heard Chris mention the very highest level card might have stations in game that only those card holders could dock (but I may be mis-remembering that just as easily).

Here is an official  poll from a month back o(http://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/poll-who-will-you-be/) of what roles players expect to play in the game:

What role are you most looking forward to playing in Star Citizen?

Chris has got interviews up on Machinma, IGN and a couple of other places this week but I wanted specifically to post the FAQ one of the forum members did about Star Citizen.

If you had any questions he's answered a ton of them.

The link is here.

I...do...not...know.

Have to see how it all works.  Nice models taken from the game engine.  More on the link up there.

I shall be flying <Beginner Ship> in Star Citizen since I'm not too fond of giving money to people this early in development, even Chris Roberts.

To each their own and I wish you luck! :D

Well, I also suck horribly at flight sims so I'll be playing with minimal PvP and trading mostly in the core systems until I get a ship that won't explode the minute its sneezed upon.  After that happens I'll start taking down NPC pirates for bounties and loot and continue from there.  Hopefully I'll end up in a superfighter with a massive Vanduul bounty on my head after getting paid lots of credits by the Empire and assorted human worlds to vaporize all their not-Dralthis and not-Darkets.

The Freelancer looks nice, though I admit the sketches looked better. However, this is all preliminary work, a lot can change.

Seems legit. :D

That's what I thought at first but the more I look at it, the more I like it. Makes me think of the Firefly universe a bit.

I actually had no problem liking this ship.  Make a few models--they never turn out fully like you imagine.  And I love the Firefly look of it too.

And yes Boshimi, it is mine...all mine.

If anyone wants to find my shameless ranting on the Roberts forum I have the same name there. ;)

BTW--am I the only one now tempted to take the Hornet and Freelancer, model them in Sins and then post video on the Roberts forum of them "in action"?

It would be epic...call me.

Yeah, Boshimi.  I'm just hoping the Vanduul curse me as the Heart of the Tiger when all is said and done. ;)

Yup. Epic. As in Epic Fail! :p :D LOL!

Curse you Major...CURSE YOOOOOOOU!

I, too, shall fly an aurora like sparda, when I am not serving in Squadron 42 (due to my extreme "skills" in aerial combat ("skills" meaning complete lack thereof (my name has become a synonym for "terrible" in games in my family))). When I improve, and get a better ship, I would enjoy flying escort missions for any of you who want it. Anyone thinking of making a sins-forum guild/clan/squadron?

Another forum I'm on is already thinking of throwing a squadron together.  Choices, choices.

And I will shamelessly match with my own future association (not a guild/clan) banner for a site I am twiddling on--slowly as usual.

P.S.  I shamelessly clicked your link and am shamelessly looking at your site.

Oooo ... can I join Sinperium?! :D

Yeah--actually, if ya want you can hop right in...not that there is a lot to do at the moment.

I actually hate clans and always play as an indie--usually a smuggler/trade runner.  Time constraints, RL, etc.  I have had some things happen a couple of times in the past that got me to form two groups on two different servers--and it went well--so I am pretty sure I can get it going once the game is running.

So I was on the forums for Star Citizen and saw the same sort of venom and hate I had run into in the other games and decided to make a group to help new and struggling and defenseless players (which is what I had done on the last Freelancer server I was on).

I hated all the spewage here when it was going on with Rebellion and I hate it there too so I am going to work to see if I can put something positive in place.

Plus, there needs to be an active group there to help destroy all other groups based on Star Wars.

Here's the link to the mostly unformed concept and my messy, disorganized quick forum.

Also here is the link to Star Citizens Constellation class freighter images.  A couple of external shots and some beautiful shots of it's interior which is still a work in progress.  Looks great!
