Modding: Where and How?

Modding: Where and How?

I have decided to try and download some mods.

I need to know what a mod entitles.

I need to know where to get mods.  What sites are good, reliable, no-viruses, ect.

I need to know wat type of mods are good. If there are different types or whatever.

I need to know how to download the mods, and move them to the game mod menu, ect.

I need to know if mods will mess up the game permenantly.

Just general how-to, info, ect.

Does it matter which game I am playing?  Trinity, Rebellion, ect.?

A screenshot of your path where the "GameInfo" folder of the mod is might be helpful if that doesn't resolve the issue.

Either type the path of the Gameinfo folder of the mod or give us a screenshot, it could be all sorts of things but it will be hard to tell without seeing that.

Here's an example for reference, but its for an older version so the mod folder is slightly different and this is inside a "Textures" folder instead of GameInfo, but it should be roughly equivalent to what you see on your Address bar. Any extra folders after the mod folder will throw the game off.

I managed to fix one of the mods, it now has a checksum. But when I try to apply changes, the game stops responding. The other one, I don't know.  It doesn't seem to have an order problem.

What mods are they?

I was able to cature an image of the menu, but didn't know how to put it here.

Mods-Rebellion v1.04 > Infinite.Space.v1.00 > I have no clue

I have the Infinite Space Mod.  Is there something specificlly wrong with that, or something?

Mods hate me.

Wouldn't know has I have never messed with that mod. Might want to try posting up your issue on that thread. A lot of us modders do our tech support there.

Are you trying to play in the dev.exe?  Do you have error reporting enabled (showErrors in your settings file)?  I have used that mod and there's a 90% chance that your issue is an "error message" popping up...hit the windows key after a while, and you'll probably be able to click on a pop up that is the error...you should be able to just skip it, no problems...

Playing in the normal .exe probably will prevent any error pop ups from coming up unless you specifically changed your settings....

Well by the time we're done here you'll be a lot more computer literate. ;)

To put a picture on the web you'll need to have it hosted on sites like photobucket or dropbox. Then you can direct link it like a picture you find on google or something.

I have not tried infinite space 1.0 yet, I guess I'll go download it now as I've been meaning to get it.

Okay, yes Infinite space has additional installation instructions. There are two versions of the mod, one with the units scaled down to make the planets feel more to scale, and one more or less the same size as standard Sins. You should only enable one of these, and you'll need to move whichever one you want to use out of the containing folder so its by itself. Also do not enabled them both at the same time.

Edit: Using the unscaled version, it worked fine with a checksum of 8830827.

Ok, I was able to play the infinite Space mod.  Thanks guys.  The hanger one still doesn't work, but it may not be for rebellion.

If that's the one that just increases the number of squads per hangar, yeah I think that is long out of date. Most mods that add content are highly version specific, so you should assume updates will kill them, so you might want to turn off automatic updates in Steam so you can keep playing.

I got the SOGE mod, and it has checksum and everything, but it won't let me play it (during loading screen, it takes a long time, so I ctrl+alt+delete to get out of that screen, and it says not responding, terminate, ect.  Where can I get the newest version?  Or is that even the problem?

For these kind of things you should ask in the SoGE thread, but I know they have their own website and beta testing system. Alternatively, they might not have gotten it up to date to 1.04 yet. Make sure you read the thread/website carefully to find what version the mod is for.

I can't extract the Maelstrom mod.  I use 7-zip.

It says that it can't open this file as archive.  Or something.

What is the file format for it?  .zip?  .rar?

I don't know.  It says it is zipped.  Where do I get this info?

Can you try extracting just using windows then?  You don't need 7 zip for that...should just right click and "Extract All"

I tried that.  It said it couldn't complete tthe compressed folder extraction wizard.

Then it says that the folder is empty, and that their is nothing to extract.

???????????????????

post in the maelstrom thread?  May be a problem with the file itself and the DL...

SoGE takes an extremely long time to load. Be ready to leave it loading for 10+ minutes if you're on an old computer.
