Need Help: After Windows Update (?), computer seems sick

Hello all, I don't know where else to ask, I trust and respect you here. I am a computer idiot who knows nothing, but this much seems evident: I run Windows 7 Home Premium on a Sony Vaio laptop, about 3 years old, never a problem; after the last automated Windows update (12 September), the computer seems as if lamed. Sometimes working ok, but often as if there is "lag", most programs freeze up, I cannot use Internet Explorer, and everything is slllooooow, although task manager (when it finally starts) tells me nothing is going on. Obviously, gaming impossible. One thing I did notice is that the day before, an automatic windows update was in the works (one of those that happen on start-up or shut-down), and I got a message I had never seen before: something like "An error occurred when updating Windows; reverting to earlier version" (I think it was what it said). When I started up on 12.09 the update went through and I didn't think about it. But since then, the computer is sick. I have no idea what to do. I also run AVG 2012 free version, and it tells me the whole computer was scanned on 13.09 and nothing bad was found. Can anyone give me some (easy to understand!!! --> I am NOT computer saavy!) suggestions?

THANK YOU

Step 1 when a system is in 'trouble'....

Access ALL important work and/or documents etc you cannot afford to lose.....and back them up to some form of external media.
End of Jafo's quote

Step 2 is anything that floats your boat....as long as step 1 is done...all else is unimportant...;)

Solution: Get a Mac.

That would be a suggestion, not a solution. ;)

As Jafo has said, back up everything important, then if your laptop still has  a recovery partition or you made recovery disks now is a good time to use one or the other.

Makes one wonder why hang out in a forum of a company that specializes in Windows applications. o_O Isn't there a tree somewhere that the Apple bunch can hang out in? :-"

I am sure you have a backup pre installed on a partition, whether or not you know how to access it is another story. How about borrowing a disc from someone. You have to boot from the disc to avoid the updates starting .

There is also a chance you can download the newest from somewhere else to a flash drive and boot up to see if windows will install the updates properly, but it is slim without setting up to boot from a usb port. I would find a seven disc, you must know someone. If you want, mail it to me and I will fix it, half joking. Try a computer shop as suggested or you are probably off shopping. Think hard ask everyone, you have a license key, you just need to borrow a disc. Good luck. I wish I could help you, but does sound like you do not reside in frewsburg NY, USA!

You can legally download Win 7 W/SP1 from Digital River if you have a valid license and use it to do a repair/upgrade install:

Yes....as long as you have the legit key....

....even someone else's disk....and if it spits a dummy and wants you to call MS...you simply call MS and explain what the problem is...and a nice Indian lady will give you the system code to correctly set the activation.  [been there and done that a few times]...;)
