Font Wars: Episode XXI

Font Wars: Episode XXI

If you’ve been following my blogs on this topic for awhile, you know how I feel about the way DirectX 9 handles TrueType fonts. Terribly.

If we had to do it over again, we would have just hand made each character.  But we didn’t. And the battles to make fonts look good has made use choose font styles that we might not otherwise have used.

Luckily, we may have a solution – thanks to the ingenuity of the lead developer of WindowBlinds and Start8. He also wrote the overlay code and gave me a DLL this morning that may solve a lot of our problems.

The first thing to understand about the magic of Stardock’s non-games business is that they know how to get into other people’s processes and add features without source code.  That’s how WindowBlinds works – it takes over the drawing of every window on the OS to one that is better, faster, and cooler.

So seeing our font issues in Fallen Enchantress, he wrote a DLL that redirects the DirectX calls to one of his own making.

So here’s what a typical screen looks like in the current build. It helps to load this up and zoom in.  If you’re in the beta, you are familiar with the limitations of D3DXFont calls.

And below is the result after his fix:

Quest-pass1

Zoom in on the various parts.

This opens the door to us being able to eventually be able to do a lot more interesting things with fonts since they’ll not be blocky, artifacty messes.

It’s still being tweaked but it’ll be interesting to see how many people notice when Beta 5 hits (which is why I’m not posting this in the journals section, fewer viewers).

Now, before someone comments, please remember, the fonts we chose for the game were based on what fonts looked best on D3DXFont which tended to be Arial and that kind of thing.

I can’t promise that we’ll be changing the fonts this late in the game. But what I can say is that the existing fonts will look a lot better and it opens things up for future updates to have interesting fonts that look good.

And here I thought Beta 4 already had an improvement in the fonts, so this is an even bigger bonus!  I was surprised about how much a difference it makes.

All this tech talk goes whooosh over my head.  I just wanted to say I thought the new look is cooler.    B)

Thanks for sharing this with us Frogboy, I always love reading these kinds of posts that give some insight into how the game works under the hood. Very interesting, and a noticeable improvement too!

Now that you have a way to have good looking fonts, it would feel like a true waste to use the very ugly Arial-esque fonts.

I would definitely hope that part of BETA 5 would be spent on changing the font into something that says "fantasy" rather than "Excel".

A lot of people loading Beta 5 will notice that something is different, but having difficulties putting a finger on what it is :d

Only one question: when?

Looks great! :)

Or you could have done what smart people do and just use freetype.

Man o man, this amazing Stardock technology is AMAZING!

Do you know...what Freetype is right? It would not have solved the issue.  You do know that we were using TrueType before via DirectX and we are still using TrueType now.

Looking at your other comments around here, http://forums.littletinyfrogs.com/replies/3459900 I think you need to decide whether you want to remain part of our community. The snark, post after post, gets old.

I'm sure someone could argue we should have used OpenGL instead of DirectX too and gotten A/B/C benefit.  The point was to discuss an improvement to THIS particular game that we're excited about.

Hey Frog it looks great. It is a big improvement.

I can see a distinct improvement between the old and the new screenshot.

But please be sure, now that you've made the text display better, that you make it actually read better... the writing on both "Three Sons" and "Snake Oil" is in need of some good editing.

"Three Sons" Current:
----
This farmhouse's fence is broken down and a cow lies dead in the field with a pair of bite marks nearly the size of short swords.  The wound still oozes with a greenish white infection and the cow's eyes are forever trapped in an expression of terror and pain.  Any other livestock that were once kept here are gone.

The farmhouse is so quiet it appears abandoned.  But when you draw close a young man jumps up on the porch and grabs his spear.  When he sees who you are he sets his spear down and tells you his story.

This farmhouse is his parents, and it was attacked a few days before by a giant spider.  He and his two brothers arrived too late, and both of his parents were bitten in the attack.  His father is already dead, his mother dies on her deathbed.

"Snake Oil" Current:
----
A merchant has setup a stand here, selling or trading colorless potions to anyone who will buy them.  A sign on his wagon reads "Enchanted Elixirs".  When he spots you he quickly begins packing up his wares, but you arrive before he has time to store them all.  Reaching down you pick one up, you can't sense any magic within it.

"This is what, simply water?" you ask.

"With a bit of sugar and grain alcohol..." the merchant replies timidly, "I used to be an honest man, but the world has no need for virtue anymore."

This looks much better and easy on the eye. Great work Frogboy and everyone working on FE.

I have not played since beta 3 and hope to try beta 5 soon :)

My brain installed a spamfilter for intelligent stuff a long time ago :P

TY frog for thinking about this, this is some of the changes that will last even longer than balance stuff :)

Impressive! These changes had a huge impact for. The UI is much more appealing now and all the important parts are actually readable (and enjoyable)!
