Norton Claims Fences2_beta1_setup.exe is not safe

I got an email saying I could upgrade to Fences 2 Beta.  I went to my account and downloaded it.  Once the download was complete, Norton checked it and tells me it's not safe.  Then it removes it.  It claims the Threat Name is WS.Reputation.1

What can I do now?

Norton is an idiot.

WS.Reputation means that Norton doesn't recognize the file (no reputation) and is being super-paranoid.  Of course it doesn't recognize it . . it's new!

Disable Norton during this download.  And slap it around some while it's disabled.

Norton has this 'feature' where if it has not seen a file before it appears to decide it must be bad as if it were good other people would have used it.  Unfortunately this seems to fall down badly with anything new or at least does pretty much every time we release a new patch or product.

I believe you can retrieve it via the Norton UI and I am sure someone will be along to explain how, but I would like to suggest you consider changing AV packages next time you come to renew.  Doing so might let Norton know that this kind of 'protection' is counter productive.

I really don't know how Norton have avoided legal hot water with this feature as it would seem to me that they are in a position of trust with the users and they have made a statement that something is bad without any evidence to back this statement and which can be later proved to be false and which is causing actual harm to the reputation of others.

Yes....what Neil said.

This definitely is NOT the first time that Norton's methodology adversely impacts on others.

Norton isn't the only culprit, either.  The new IE has its SmartScreen (I think that's what it's called) that scans downloaded files for ones it recognizes.  It's blocked some of our software before for the same reasons.

Wow....I now know how to get some SD love in the forums.

Just make a thread that claims a Stardock app is malware, and the whole gang shows up!

As I have mentioned before on other threads, I was a technical support rep at a help desk for many, many years . I can tell you without question that at least 55% to 65% of the problems I resolved for customers all revolved around issues that had been created by Norton Anti-virus(Symantic) and don't even get me started on Mcafee AV. !! oh lord!! My family and I have been using Microsofts Security Essentials for the last 3+ years and have never experienced any problems or issues as a result of this awsome anti-virus program. I still cannot believe people are wasting their money on Norton or Mcafee when Microsofts is FREE and kicks butt !!       -- Ace --

I had the same problem a few months ago with WindowFX 5. I took Neil's advice and gave Norton's the ol' heave ho when my subscription expired last month. When they asked why I was un-installing it I told them I wasn't happy with the way they wanted to decide what I should or shouldn't run on my PC.

Norton needs an urgent visit to the scrap heap.

Especially after their "Malware Scan Tool" turned out to be nothing but scare-ware, and their code was leaked in India.

0 credibility.

No doubt, I cringe every time a family/friend has me look at their computer for them and the first thing I find is that bloatware running.
