Dungeons and Act III

Small_Temple_Tactical_Map

So as some of you know, we’ve been working on trying to have more interesting things start to happen during what we call “Act III”.

Act I is where you’re exploring the world, founding cities, dealing with the monsters.

Act II is where you’re building up your cities, starting to trade with other factions, fighting skirmishes

Act III is where you start to deal with the end game. Going on quests, fighting wars, starting to unleash the more powerful spells.

Just to emphasize: These are tactical maps. Not strategic.

looking good regarding the blocked areas behind the walls, is there any chance for a 'door' section of wall that has so much health, and when 'killed' allows access to the rest(blocked out) section of the tac map?

Just to clarify: I am stealing those maps for my Labyrinth Quest. *Yoink*

Great idea, but I am going to throw a caution out there.  Please do not get stuck in the Dragon Age mentality of reusing the same 3-4 dungeons for everything.  That's it.

Sooo, 5+ dungeons...got it!

Just when I thought I had a great game in the making you go and make it even better. Great surprise!

Could you add hidden traps like spikes, poison gas, and falling boulders to these dungeons? That would be epic!

If the devs decide to add in terrain bonus logic to the AI, then that would be moddable, UmbralAngel. That hope is probably more likely for the expansion though.

Right now Act I lasts all of 10 seconds (or however long it takes to load the world map). The game practically starts in Act II mode...

@spriditis - I agree. There is little wildness to fight, so its just killing mites/wolves/bandits and producing pioneers

End game is the most difficult challenge for TBSs. So far, I find the Elemental game setting to be just as challenged as other TBSs here; there is still a lot of late game tedium. I do not think that FE is much worse off than other (successful) games out there, such as the Civilization franchise -- some of whose iterations I really liked, despite, in my opinion, suffering the most from Late Game Tedium with the possible exception of Dominions. It's hard to see from your Original Post what other activity besides interesting dungeons you have planned. I think more structural strategic challenge would be helpful -- see the thread in the link above, for example. Thanks much and good luck!

Looks good. I feel this is a step toward [Unnamed Elemental RPG]. Am I right Jon?

Reminds me of the tactical dungeons in Age of Wonders.  Simpler, less interesting game, with braindead AI, but that was a fine idea.  I'm glad you've picked up on it, since you'll do it a lot better.

Brad, is that a valid comparison, or is it more of a single-room affair, with navigation done via text menus?

I have to admit I'm curious as to what this topic is about. I mean, there's not actually any information in the OP.

Clearly they've decided to scrap the entire original design of FE and turn it into a Dwarf Fortress clone.  I look forward to many hours of harvesting wood to build tables.

Are these going to be multi-room dungeons or is it just a new battlemap? I can't really work it out from the picture
