Functionality Request-Options similar to Windows 7's start menu

1. Allow us to customize what is shown on the right pane similar to what we could with Windows 7. In my case in Win7 I only have it set to show Documents/Picture/Music/Video/Computer/Control Panel

2. Ability to use right pane buttons as flyout menus, again just reverting back to Windows 7's optional behaviour. I'd much prefer to use the Control Panel as a menu rather then a button.

3. Ability to Right-Click > Properties the 'Computer' link and open the System window instead of the shortcut's properties. Again just reverting back to the behaviour of the traditional start menu here.

These are all things we're looking into now.  Feasible?  Who knows, but we'll at least take a stab at it.  :)

Seconded!

Start8 was the first (non-driver) program I installed on my Win8 (RTM) machine just to keep the insanity a little bit under control.  It's done wonders for my blood pressure not to see the Crayola Start Menu ^_^

However, I'm really missing the fly-out menus and shortcuts to "Recent".  I think I'm using the Win7 start menu the same way as RandPC, mine is all set up to expand to menus on the right.

Another thing that would be nice is to pin items to the jump list for start menu items.  It shows options to "Pin to Start" or "Pin to Taskbar", but these are more appropriate for the program, instead of documents.

I think if you could undo the damage Microsoft has wrought and "simply" recreate the Windows 7 start menu, you'd have literally millions of happy customers once Win8 starts shipping.  I figure it's probably not as easy and simple as it sounds, but please try!

And while you're at it, how about an Aero skin?  I HATE the flat look, I think the whole generation of current UI designers (Apple, Google, and now Microsoft) should be sent back to school for the idiotic flat, colorless UIs they have been inflicting on people.  As far as I'm concerned, Win8 UI style is only marginally better than Windows 3.1; even Win95 was better (and, yes, I'm old enough to have used both of these).  Sorry for ranting, can't help my frustration!
