MMMM....Mentor/Mentee Multiplayer Matchup Thread

MMMM....Mentor/Mentee Multiplayer Matchup Thread

Mentor/Mentee Multiplayer Matches (MMMM...)

So I had this idea. Which I totally stole from other MP game communities. But it's a good idea
worth stealing. The MP community in Sins is like that grass you see pushing up out of the concrete.
It wasn't really supposed to be there, but it's kind of stubbornly persisted and waxed and waned, sometimes
sprayed with weed killer of bad balance or neglect and sometimes bouyed up with sunshine and rain of dev
patches and forum initiatives.

I remember when I first started playing Sins MP back when vanilla Sins came out. UE Carbon was organizing a
tournament. I remember playing one game. The rest of the players never connected with their opponents, apathy set in,
and the tournament fizzled. I played just a little in Entrenchment, not at all in Diplomacy, and then came back for Rebellion.
I don't think I really grasped the game all that well until Rebellion - I've easily played more in Rebellion than I ever did
in vanilla-Entrenchment combined.

I want to see how much interest there is for a MP forum mentor-mentee initiative. Mentor would be someone who knows the game well enough to teach a beginner. Mentee should be obvious. Mentor doesn't have to be a "pro" or expert. Just have a decent enough understanding to help bring a mentee up to speed in playing online. I see this as a good opportunity for new players in Rebellion or long time SP players who have dabbled in MP and want to get better and participate in it. If enough people are interested, it's a chance to increase the number of players online and get more games going. We could even organize some mentor/mentee 2v2 matches and see who's imparted their skills the best. Mentees don't have to all be total noobs either - maybe some are at an average-ish level already online but want to up their game in specific ways.

So, I'm just testing the water first to see who is interested. If you are, please post below with the following:

1. Mentor or mentee
2. Estimated skill level online (beginner, semi-competent, average, above average, skilled, pro)
3. Time zone
4. Times usually available to play
5. What you are interested in teaching/learning (eg. maybe all the basics, maybe a specific race, maybe eco slot or suicide slot specifically, etc. or just anything goes)
6. Steam name

If there's enough interest, we can use this thread to connect mentor/mentee. Sometimes as a mentor it helps to watch a replay first of the mentee playing to get an idea of where they're at. I'm expecting semi-apathy/feeble interest but like the game enough to try anyway and see what happens. Remember this is for online play which generally means fastest settings and pirates off.

above average/sometimes skilled when I'm not too sleepy

REPLAYS:

By default, your MP replays can be found in the AutoRecord-Multiplayer folder of your Sins Rebellion folder (which itself is inside IronClad Games folder). You can turn on Auto-Record inside your in-game options to capture them. To download and watch replays, follow these instructions:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/430699

Feel free to add any replays you'd like advice on by posting in this thread with a link to the uploaded file (if not sure how to do this, just ask or check the free file share websites people use in threads like this: https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/430829).

I might do this...but I've never played an online game on here before, would assume some error or something would ruin it anyways. :p

I only know how to deal with AIs mainly on Normal...I know the Vasaris the most, and I think I'm sticking with the Rebels due to their small defense/armor boost. (that and I love their titan, lol) I guess the Advent Loyals would be my next choice.

1. Mentee (because chances are I'm going to suck against real people)

2. Semi-competent (still messing with all 6 factions, if I'm the Advent I can put up a nasty defense, lol)

3. EST

4. I currently have no life, and is a night owl, lol. Sooooo, sometime between 12PM and 3AM. xD

5. BellGoRiiing (if that doesn't work then it's all lowercase)

I hear Huy Mac is offering English lessons in the ICO chat lobby. He specializes in CAPSLOCK dialect.

(King's troll radar needs fine tuning...)

Lol....this poor thread has been so abused....

Yeah, it's not been that successful. The trolling aside, mentees are often too passive. Myself, Seleuceia, Red Ruby, and King Kaing are often online and have stated intent to help so we should probably just leave the onus on mentees to get online themselves, add us, communicate, whatever to get some practice games in.

1. mentee
2. beginner
3. Eastern Standard time.
4. 11:AM to 3:AM is the best. (alto my internet is crappy so it could vary)
5. I just want to get better and be able to actually help my allies... (and i love the Vasari, Loyalist or rebel)
6. I don't think giveing my steam account would be a good idea.. i have 4 brothers who also use it... and would delete it (LONG story). However I can be online at my allotted times everyday (unless theirs a rainstorm).

I am in the same boat as night raider, I have yet to receive a mentor. Please help me to become good like the pros. Teach me how to kill corsevs with corvettes please.

A shame this attitude still persists with some noobs even today...

your calling others noobs.. o0

..

I need a mentor too

I'm very open minded about this game and would like to learn new stuff. Please teach me how to play vasari online in eco and frontline positions?

Chris/Fallen One - next game we play I will show you how to tech straight to a Titan using just your homeworld. I know you tried to do it last game but weren't quite successful and I had to help you find a new homeworld to do it at. Next time I am on your team, I'll show you how to do it while also making sandwiches.

And I rather just find out a good time on here first...don't wanna bother going online in-game to hope to find some help. (and I kinda don't want to play with randoms, always hated it regardless of game. >_>)

BellGoRiing I can show you some Advent Loyalist gameplay if you want to add me. I'll be honest though - my point in making this thread and putting any time in to help people to get better is because I'd like to see more people playing online. Which means learning the online game. Pirates off, Faster settings, etc. So even though we could start vs. AI just to help you with basics, it would mean playing vs. or with other random people soon enough as the AI gameplay just isn't very good or representative of playing vs, people.

Not sure about tonight (started a new SP game and don't really feel like starting over yet again for MP. xD), but maybe sometime tomorrow...does everyone really turn off the pirates in MP? o.0

Ah well, anyways for my first MP game I might just stick with the Vasari, since I played as them often in the past.

I really liked this game since a lot and finally made the step of purchasing it. Would really like to learn to play Multiplayer from someone. Im CET time (from spain)

1. Mentee
2. Beginner
3. CET
4. Nights and some afternoons from 19:00 or so forward.
5. Learning pretty much all the basics of the multiplayer metagame and from there I would try to improve myself via replays or streams. TEC race prefered if poss.
6. Gonzip

I've played quite a few RTS and i think i learn fast! Also i'm dedicated and I never stop asking questions.

4. Most Evenings

5. Practice Practice Practice

6. Zarabeth

Already have a lot of experience with RTS's and I think I have a good feel for the meta in Sins from watching a lot of replays and catching some of the live streams. Looking to get some good practice now to work on strats and get the basics to be habit. Already added a lot of the listed mentor's on steam. Vasari Loyalist has been my favorite so far.

email me at [email protected] and we talk mucho sobre el game.  i do not speak englash only deutch

Psycho917, I'll check once I'm home for your steam add and see if we can get some games in over the weekend. I think you're just an hour or two ahead of me.

Gonzip - I'd suggest adding Red Ruby from this thread as he's in Europe so it'd be easier to play with him. Just ignore Mr. Nightraid3r - he's feeling lonely and engaging in attention-seeking behavior again (or, alternately, email him if you're into that sort of thing).

I have been playing sins off and on since 2009, and have picked up and lost a lot of skills during this time. I really want to get back into playing sins, but lack a core group to play with.

1. Mentor (willing to be a mentee of a pro)
2. Above Average-Skilled (possibly quite rusty)
3. CST (UTC -6) (but I mostly work weekend so I am flexible during the week)
4. As above Im pretty flexible, but I prefer to play during the evenings
5. Im interested in teaching/learning anything from the basics to refining complex strats.
6. TheGreenLing (contacting in steam is optimal)

Note: Owning a mic and being able/willing to use it is a requirement. Prefer to use mumble (have servers).

Hi GreenLing - at the very least, if you used to be good at the game and want to get back into it, I'd suggest just hopping on ICO most evenings and joining 5v5 games. They'll usually accept at least a couple new players with no record, especially if you tell them you played in Diplomacy and are just now returning. Appreciate you adding yourself as a mentor for new players to contact too. Hopefully see you online soon.
