Also, I have yet played online against others, so, how fast are games played on the net.

I think the minimum accepted speed for multiplayer is "fast."

faster is standard. except victory speed, which is left on normal.

Singleplayer:  Normal.  I love the epic length of multi-system campaigns.  Taking 12 hours to conquer a random 3-system map can be quite satisfying.

Obviously though, I don't play this in one sitting...
