objectDockPlus system tray is useless

I bought OD+ just for the sytem tray. The free version works great but lacks a systray option. After giving stardock $20, I find the systray option is a JOKE. I have to have a SECOND OD on my desktop (hidden or otherwise) to view systray icons. And then, the icons look like crap. Has stardock looked at nexus winstep? They have a FREE systray option. You click on it, and up pops windows 7 own systray. PERFECT. Exactly what I want. I use winstep mainly. But, frankly, I prefer OD because it supports docklets and winstep does not. I like my fan stacks and grid stacks and winstep doesn't have those.

So, really, stardock. After all this time, you can't put in a simple routine that calls windows 7 systray app and displays windows 7 systray? Winstep does it, for FREE. You're not worth the money. why buy any other products from you? Are they going to be the same crap implementation of a promised option? Your multi-tray approach is kludgy, the kind of hack you'd find back on windows 98. Sad.

Thanks for the feedback.  ObjectDock is designed to use it's own dock system to display content and not use the Windows functions . . . it does what it does on purpose.  I have a separate single-tab dock that functions is a manner similar to the Windows systray that I am able to skin which makes it not useless.

I'll pass on your feedback to the dev though.

Nice!

Wow! Cool down. :-P

As the developer of Nexus, I can tell you straight away that personally I prefer to show all the system tray icons in the dock. However, Nexus does give you a choice: you can either show only the visible icons in the dock (and display the 'hidden' ones in the Windows 7 own pop-up tray) or show them all in the dock, just like ObjectDock does (Nexus also allows you to show them as 16x16 icons in grouped mode).

Showing them all in a dock is technically superior, so you are shooting down ObjectDock for something that it is actually doing right. Furthermore, depending on a call to Microsoft code is always a gamble, since that particular functionality might be non-existent in a future version of Windows.

As for the systray support being in the free version of Nexus, you seem to be ignoring the fact that both Winstep and Stardock are businesses! The *only* reason I made the system tray available in the free version of Nexus, instead of it just being available in Nexus Ultimate like Stardock does for ObjectDock Plus, was because Nexus was a newcomer into a market already saturated with free docks and the free version needed to differentiate itself from what was already there.

This was a good decision in terms of marketing, but business wise it was a *terrible* decision, since it is one less factor pushing you to purchase  Nexus Ultimate. Stardock is actually doing the right thing from a business perspective. :)

Hope you have nothing against us thinking from a business perspective, by the way, otherwise just look at what happened to all the free docks not backed by a commercial side: they are all dead or in limbo (RocketDock's last update was, what, 3-4 years ago?), while Nexus and ObjectDock are still very much alive and kicking.

As for fans and grids (Stacks), you can always use Cris'n'Softs stand alone Stacks with the free version of Nexus. A native Stacks docklet is an upcoming feature, but you will only find it in Nexus Ultimate when it does get implemented, and not in the free version. Nexus Ultimate's existing support for multi-level sub-docks is actually functionally superior to Stacks, but I understand how it just doesn't have the 'flair' that Stacks has.

Hi,

I love the ObjectDock concept.  I've purchased the Plus version (to JcRabbit's point I only purchased it so I can have a system tray dock as well as my main dock.)

But the system trray drives me crazy.  I read through this thread and I don't think the answers address my problem (happy to be put straight on that).

Rather than simply say "the system tray is useless" I would like to ask two questions:

1. I have a laptop, and I need to connect to hotel WiFi or other WiFi hotspotrs a lot.  The WiFi icon on the OD system dock does absoutely nothing as far as I can tell.  I can right-click on it, but that does not get me to the hotspot menu.  It's OK at home because my home WiFi is already set up to join automatically.  The problem only happens when there is a new WiFi hotspot that I need to join.

2. I want to change the volume, or mute the volume by clicking the volume icon in the system tray.  Nope.  That one's really funny - I click on the volume icon and it seems to flicker as though it's doing something, but nothing actually happens.  What's really bizarre is that right-click brings up a floating menu so I can open the mixer etc., but how clunky is that?

The only solution I have found to these problems is to exit OD, do what I need to do in Windows, and then restart OD.  Not cool.  I always try to do it when nobody's looking :-)

BTW - running Windows 7 and OD Plus 2.  Not sure what version as there's no "about OD" option I can find.

Cheers,

SPuD

Open the control panel, double click the "network and sharing center" icon, in that window select "manage network connections" in the menu on left side. In the window that opens right click on the "wireless connection icon" and select "Create a short cut". it will say "windows cant create a shortcut here would you like it placed on desktop?". click yes.  then go to your desktop and drag the short cut to your dock.. now you should have a working shortcut directly to the wifi connections center on your dock..

As for the sound create a new shortcut in object dock and add this to the link section. %SystemRoot%\System32\SndVol.exe then save ok and  the icon should change to the Sound CPL defaults (a speaker) and the shortcut on the dock will open the windows sound control. I know there must be a simpler command to directly access the mute function but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.. Ill post if I do..

Cheers..

if you want this functionality have a look here: http://customize.org/rainmeter/skins/84802

among these tools is traypopup.exe. it does that.

Hi HG_Eliminator,

Thank you for the fast reply - this sounds promising...

But when I open the Network and Sharing Center I only have these options in the left hand menu:

  • Manage Wireless Networks
  • Change Adapter Settings
  • Change Advanced Sharing Settings

In other words, there's no "Manage Network Connections" option.  I clicked on "Manage Wireless Networks" in case that was what you meant, but then there's no "wireless connection icon" that I can see, just a list of remembered wireless networks.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Cheers,

SPuD

My bad.. try this....  In the start menu select "run" then ,type this   ncpa.cpl  in the popup window and press enter.  Then in the window that pops up right click on the "wireless connection icon" and select "Create a short cut". it will say "windows cant create a shortcut here would you like it placed on desktop?". click yes.  then go to your desktop and drag the short cut to your dock.. now you should have a working shortcut directly to the wifi connections center on your dock..

forgot W7 got rid of a bunch of shortcuts throughout the new interfaces.. .. ;)

If run is not enabled heres a quick tut on how to enable it  link

Lemme know if this sorts it out for you..

Cheers..

YOu can try the docklet at https://www.wincustomize.com/explore/objectdock/14589/ too.

Thats prolly a much easier and a better fix then my sound manager shortcut.

Wow - I can definitely confirm that HG's method worked.  I'm out at a conference at the moment so I'll try the other suggestions later in the week.

Many thanks for all your suggestions.

a workaround for systray icons is to replace'm with a transparent 1x1 pixel icon and check "show original icon in corner" :

Hi.

This was MY solution(s) to the above problems...

Music Volume - As was suggested before I used the Master Volume Docklet. Works a treat (Win 7)

https://www.wincustomize.com/explore/objectdock/14589/

Wifi Connector (You'll LIKE this...). I agree that the system tray options are very limited and that you NEED quick access to wifi connection. SO here is what I did.

• I installed Wifi Info Docklet - https://www.wincustomize.com/explore/objectdock/14429/ This docklet displays "WiFi signal strength and SSID, and changes the icon shown depending on the signal strength detected"

• Then, in the docklet settings I added "RunDll32.exe" in the command field, and "van.dll,RunVAN" in the parameters field (both without the inverted commas).

Now, when you left click, it loads the wifi connection window, JUST like the sys tray version PLUS it shows you signal strength in the dock.

Finally, because I am anal, I split my docks to keep the sys tray separate. Oh, and I use Fences..... Try it. You'll never live without it!!
