Sudden crashes to desktop

Yes, the game crashes on me, sometimes its the out of blue without any reason crash, with that C++ error, with nothing basically happening on the screen. But it crashes lot of time right into desktop, and the common denominator in such situation are major battles happening. The game becomes choppy and as i zoom in and out - BANG - i am on desktop.

Yesterday this happened to me again, was attacking enemy Advent starbase with my Vasari fleet - Titan, five capitals and about 40 smaller ships. Luckily, i saved the game before doing phasejump to that planet, so i loaded, proceeded with the same actions, and again, as i was zooming on my ships firing at the starbase, skirantras started to heal and it crashed again...

So, for the first time, i decided to lower my settings - usually i play 1920x1200, everything highest detail, umaskable AA + 2xAF.  So I put everything to medium. And surprise, surprise - the same battle again - no crash this time. Now i am going to try the same save several more times on both higher and lower settings, to see, if this was not just coincidence, respectively if there is any pattern, but if there indeed is, as it seems, what the f should i be doing?

The thing is, i REFUSE to play on lower details, because my GPU is GTX590. I admit i play only with one GPU on, i am not sure whether Sins supports Multi-GPU anyway, but even one gpu of that power should be enough for the game, its not Battlefield 3 ffs, What is the issue anyway? Lack of videoRAM? Are the textures copied into those 2GB of system RAM, so  may it be issue with the fact its 32 bit? Does anyone else have such crashes during heated battles on max settings?

Happened to me yesterday too. I was watching my brand new Vasari Rebel Titan decimating a pirate fleet attacking my colony while i had a starbase duking it out with an Advent starbase on another planet, and it just crashed to desktop as if it had just shutdown.

And i had the game on full settings and 1920x1080 resolution at the time, i'll load the last autosave and see if it happens again, and if it does i'll lower the settings.

Edit: Replayed that battle twice, but couldn't get it to crash again.

Ok, so i played some more and while its not 100percent guaranteed, tha the game would crash in that battle i talked about, it crashed, as i attacked very next planet. So i downgraded  ship/structure bump and extra from highest to high, and did not help. Only when i downgraded the same settings to medium, the game seemed to be stable even under circumstances, where previously would most likely crash.

Not very happy about that.

Im having the same thing i think. One moment ill be doing something like say last time it was placing a counter-bounty on my enemy when i crashed. This happens every game. However each time is random. Almost everytime im clicking on something so when i hear the windows error sound i click the close program button. I have check my temp folder to find no folder called "sins dump" so i cant email a minidump or w/e. Of not each time is during an mp session online with a friend. Its so bad i havnt dared play much since it started in beta 2b. Ive played since 2c and 3a but each one crashes.

The one time i managed to see the error it was the typical windows "were sorry but xxxx program has failed and needs to close." Crap.

Im going to post my system error message below:

Edit: Appears there is none. Last system log if from hours before on a diffrent program. So i cant help unless there another place for logs.

Edit 2: My system Specs are:

Windows 7 64bit Ultimate with Aero Theme on.
Intel i5 750 cpu @ 2.67 Ggz
4gb Ram
Geforce gtx 460 DDR5 1gb

there have been numerous threads about this. The issue has to do with graphics settings. It's not that your system can't handle the graphics, but that sins can't. Running in windowed mode usually eliminates this problem. However, it's not 100%... My game just ended on account of this.

What settings? I understand windowed mode but id like to try avoiding the settings your did not mention. Maybe that would work no?

I didnt mention other settings because I havent turned down other settings. I like to have things look good, and since putting it in windowed mode worked (up until today), that's the way I ran it.

ok... whatever just caused my latest crash had something to do with graphics... I notice my ship shooting green rectangles at something and then it immediately crashed. Since everything else looked fine, and since sins imports all the assets first, I'm thinking that maybe some of the Vram data is getting overwritten or somehow the pointers are incorrect. when it returns the bad data, it thinks everything is golden, but it just displays weird. However, I'm thinking that OpenGL/DirectX (not sure which Sins uses, or maybe both) picks up on it eventually and just terminates the session, which ends the game fairly quickly. Or maybe it throws a flag that causes windows to terminate it like that, I'm not sure.

Anyways, that's my frustrated guess after trying to play sins several times today and not getting far.

Ive seen similar things. Shortly after a match starts some of my ships/the planets npc defense ships would have blocky white effects for the muzzle flash effect. This however was back in .76-.80 Havnt seen this since but then again i havn't tried since.

If it helps the devs im running 296.1 for my geforce drivers. These are the latest stable ones. The beta ones i had to remove due to other games /my desktop having random pink freakouts.

Just to add, yesterday i played for 3-4 hours with 3 AIs and had only one c++ crash, but none of those sudden straight to desktop ones... granted, i probably did not fight any huge battle as game before, but aside of that, i played with non maskable AA instead of 2XAA and i am under impression, it may be down to that. Well, perhaps AA was just the tipping point, where the graphics is too heavy for my gpu, but then again, perhaps its the AA main culprit here, causing those crashes. Do not know, what is the difference between non maskable and 2x AA though, so maybe i talk nonsense.

No way Timmaigh you never talk nonsense you are just nonsensical sometimes. You might have a point though and I will experiment with this. ;P :karma:
