Any mechanics in the house??

Any mechanics in the house??

Real .. ones?

Having an issue with my 89 camry, something to do with the drive train.

If anyone knows what the hell they are doing I would love some interaction... losing my mind.

I've taken it to 3 diff. mechanics and heard 3 different diagnosis'

Pipe up if you think you may be able to help me, and I'll explain the issue.

Thanks in advance...

John, why are you buying petrol guzzlers when you have no income other than your master skins?

(this is vampothika btw )

you should really do yourself a favour and buy the smallest car you can (3 cylenders if you must)

you will save on petrol.

i know its a bit late to tell you this now.... but cars DO cost a lot of bloody money, especially when you have none.

and the trouble with old cars, in the end your going to have to replace EVERYTHING...its happening now im afraid.

if public transport is available, id be selling the car on ebay and cut your losses

I don't think you understand Dave, he cannot afford another car.

Was just trying to lighten up with a bit of fun only. Sorry if I offended anyone.

He had the van way before the car Kitty, it was all he could afford at the time. He bought the Camry finally because it used less fuel, but then it broke down over a year ago and he is just now trying to get it working again. But being forced to move to a higher rent home recently ... well, you get the story. :(

P.S.  I don't think we have 3 cylinder cars here. ;)

The "auto doc" graphic in Syd's post gave me an idea:

was merely giving the thread a 'light' bump..... interesting what you came up with from it doc...

I think the OP was fairly succinct.... if a new car was on the cards.... the thread would be about which best new car to buy.... but, it's not...

It's a country area.... no public transport.... so, car is a must...

Unless you count the Geo Metro/G10....... hmmm....  that name is similar to a much more modern half-assed idea. ;P

I have other income than that, and I am not the only one working, this thread really has nothing to do with what your talking about.

Besides.. its a 2.0 4cyl. engine that is very very good on gas mileage... I only paid 500 bucks for it.

Why would i sell my car? lol... there is no public trans. here.

I also have a Grand Voyager Van. Would rather just be driving something better on gas. ;)

@Jafo, The engine has been rebuilt, inexpensively and other than this issue, its in excellent condition. less than 100k on it, for this particular car, that's not much at all. Hardly a lemon.

Does it happen/change under cornering loads... No

....applying the brake... No.

....same speed but different gears...Same.

Anyway, this thread got a little OT... Me and a friend are going to put it on jacks tomorrow, and get under it with a stethoscope, like doc mentioned and look at the places that Carguy suggested to me on the phone.

Thx everyone.

John, keep in mind that you will be taking the load off the wheel bearings with the car on jacks and the weight off of them, so bearing noise would be less noticeable.

Also, be sure to support the lower control arms to keep the axles as straight as you can when running the car on jacks. If you run it with the wheels hanging too far you could damage your CV joints.

Put simply you should never run a car on jacks.

People die doing that....;)

You should run the car on the ground on wheel rollers in a garage to be safe John.  One that has a pit underneath it so you can locate the problem. That is the ONLY safe way.  Maybe a garage in the area would be nice and let you use it? Although I doubt it, there are hardly any kind people left in the world like that. :(

Yes, they do.

I had a good friend who was killed when the concrete blocks supporting a car he was working on crumbled. Use high quality jack stands

(in a pinch, railroad ties make good supports, cut to a useable length.)

and please, be careful. Don't stick anything completely under the vehicle that you can't afford to lose. You've got a WB to finish. ;)

Edit: Weirdest double post, quoted myself???

at least I'm a reliable source ;)

That plus the (low cost) car stethoscope should locate the problem... fixing it might be another story...

Ok will keep that in mind, wont do it for long and I wont be the one under it.. lol.. but I dont have access to a lift\pit so basically this is only option.

We do have a stethoscope and jack stands. :)

Thx all.

To be safe,  jack the car up, remove the front wheels and tighten the lug nuts down onto the rotors to hold them on tightly. Put a cinder block under each of the lower control arms and use jack stands behind both front wheels to support the car. Lastly, chock the rear wheels and set the parking brake. You can run the car without the wheels on it, just keep the rpms down to a minimum and use 1st gear.

The blocks will support the front end and hold the axles straight and with the wheels off you can check the bearings without getting under the car.

I don't have to tell you not to get under a running car, I'm sure you already know that. ;)

Alright.. thanks for the tips.. and yeah.. I didn't mean was going to literally get under it.. only try to listen where the noise is coming from the outside of the vehicle as opposed to driving it.

A stethoscope isn't essential.....wouldn't be the first time I'd located which tappet was off....with the use of a screwdriver to the ear....

...er placing the other end to the vee hick al ....;p

alot of people scoff about 3 cylender or small motors.. but at the end of the day, the owner of the small car is laughing when they have filled up and payed 20 bucks, and driven off, while every other moron is still filling up their 6 cylinder guzzlers  and its going over 100 dollars. :)

with todays economy, people have to think more smart, not materialistic.

anyway, back to john, well, just trying to give you a bit of financial advice....to help in your endevours like the rest. wasnt personally attacking .

comme ci, comme ca. good luck with your car

Thats all well and good, but the car is extremely efficient already and the thread was not started looking for financial advice, just some opinions on a mechanical issue.

Thx anyway. |-)
