How to turn off updates in steam so you can finish your games.

People seriously need this...???

Since people are always whining about "OMG MY SAVE BROKE" due to the updates and then we get the complaints and such.

Yet they don't have any idea that you can turn off automatic updating in Steam so you can finish those games and update later.

So I decide to make this short little guide on how to not update your game.

1. Go to Steam

2. Go to your Game Library.

3. Right click the game and go to properties.

4. Go to Updates

5. Select "Do Not Update Automatically"

Come on people at least learn the features that Steam has.

Note: Please don't make comments on bugs/imbalances if you are playing on an older version. Make sure to check on that.

I have found this on my own, but every day or so it switches itself back to auto update.  This seems to be a bug.  I know I am not the only one who has this problem.

I have to agree with S3hel.  I am doing exactly what you describe, but the next time I load steam, it has reset itself to auto update in spite of me setting it to not do so.

Any chance of fixing this?

There is another way to ensure the version of Rebellion you are playing an extended game with OR in the future running a mod with is ALWAYS available.

  1. Go to your program files, steam, steamapps, common directory and make a copy of the entire sins of a solar empire rebellion directory.
  2. Rename the directory to include the version it's for or something else that makes sense to you.
  3. Open Steam
  4. Select Games (top menu) -> Add a Non-Steam game to My Library...
  5. Select the rebellion exe from your copy above
  6. Start your rebellion copy

you should now have a copy of rebellion you can play old save games or mods with while your steam managed copy continues to receive updates.

Heads-up that there may be another update to fix common bugs tomorrow.

This is a really old problem with Steam, it's been either unable or unwilling to remember that setting for as long as it's been around. If you have a real interest in working around it you can put your steamapps folder under source control, but it doesn't look like a fix is coming anytime soon.

Anyway, it's nothing to do with Sins.

What does this mean, please? Does the beta version require connecting to the internet before it will start?

No, the beta does not require you to be online in order to play. You can start Steam in offline mode and still play the game without any problems. Only Steamcloud and other online features are of course disabled when playing without internet connection
