re-install after moving from impulse (gamestop) to stardock central.

A strange question.

I recently renewed my Object Desktop subscription directly with Stardock instead of going to GameStop and using their "updated" version of Impulse.  I uninstalled all of my Stardock software (not games) that I had previously maintained using Impulse and installed the new version of Stardock Central.  When I downloaded all of the applications that came up using that program I noticed that several of the older programs were not installed (I'm assuming these were the legacy programs that are not supported anymore or don't work under Windows 7 64-bit).  The programs installed correctly and everything seems to be working correctly (WindowBlinds, IconPackager & Fences Pro are working correctly).

However, since I do have the GameStop application also installed (I have several games I purchased both from Stardock and 3rd parties installed like Sins of a Solar Empire, Galactic Civilization I and II, DemiGod, The Political Machine, Crysis 2 and Dragon Age 2 on my system) the Gamestop application now shows the Object Desktop applications as "installed" - plus it shows updates available for SkinStudio Professional 7, IconDeveloper and Keyboard Launchpad, while Stardock Central doesn't show any available updates...

Is this just a glitch or do I have to completely uninstall the GameStop application?

I don't know how SD is handling games. But SDC and the Stardock Store are the only places to get stardock desktop apps. Some apps don't show in SDC yet, it is still a beta itself. You should be able to get whatever you should have but doesn't show in SDC at this link.

This is good, because Impulse is no longer used for Stardock Desktop Apps.

You will want to keep Impulse installed because of the Games, both the Stardock games and the non-Stardock games.

Like Redneck said (and as you did), you want to get the Object Desktop apps either through SDC or the Stardock link he gave.  After you install from either of those places Impulse will quite likely indicate there are updates available for those apps because the Impulse version does not match the version you now have installed.  Ignore the Impulse messages for the Object Desktop software, you definitely do not want to "update" through Impulse at this point.

When I downloaded all of the applications that came up using that program I noticed that several of the older programs were not installed (I'm assuming these were the legacy programs that are not supported anymore or don't work under Windows 7 64-bit).

There are indeed several programs that fall exactly into that catagory. Replies #111 and #125 here discuss a lot of them if you want to have a look:

That was exactly the correct thing to do, good instincts on your part.

GraveDigger, "You chose wisely." :)

This is a very good post, as it summarizes the current situation very well (as I understand it) and the correct actions to take, and I have bookmarked it for others to refer to as this situation comes up from time to time.

Good work. As you and DaveRI said so well,

I decided to try this on my laptop as well but in this case I would COMPLETELY remove Impulse from the system since I didn't have ANY games installed (Stardock titles or 3rd party games installed thru Impulse/GameStop).  I first uninstalled all of the desktop applications I could through Impulse (although WindowBlinds appeared as "available" instead of "installed" (which it was)).  Then I rebooted the system, went to the Programs & Features control panel and noted which applications still appeared as being installed.  Then, using Revo Uninstaller I uninstalled the remaining programs and all traces from the registry of these programs (IconPackager, SkinStudio, WindowBlinds and a few others still appeared as "installed" although they were supposedly removed by Impulse...) as well as removing Impulse from the system.

Next I rebooted the system again, and used CCleaner and Glary Utilities to clean any remaining tracks of the installed programs from the system.  I also used Windows Explorer to delete any folders in the Windows Start menu and icons on the Desktop that failed to be removed.  Then after another reboot, I downloaded and installed the Stardock Central beta.

I was surprised to note that when I ran Stardock Central this time it found additional programs as being available to download (Demigod, Gal Civ II and Sins of a Solar Empire) as well as the various "current" components of Object Desktop - Gal Civ I did not appear on the available list (I'll download it separately). I also noted that some of the older components (including some that are not shown as legacy components (MyColors, LogonStudio, DesktopX)) did not appear as available downloads in Stardock Central - I'm assuming that these are not fully compatible with Windows 7 and therefore were not shown.

By the way, is there any difference between the applications downloaded thru Stardock Central and the standalone downloads available at the store at Stardock.com?  I had previously downloaded all of the applications I could from the site and it appears to take a long time for Stardock Central to download the applications again.  I can just run the standalone versions if it's faster and supply the serial number information as needed.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions - I'm trying to make this a clean a process as possible.

Nope. Just a different means.

MyColors- discontinued, outdated, unsupported.  Best to not install it.

DesktopX- Not sure what to tell you, other than at the moment it seems to be problematic based on posts I've read.  I've lost track of which versions (Pro vs Standard, current versions vs previous versions) might be working on which o/s. Probably best to not install it right this minute, particularly if you are not inclined to deal with true betas.

LogonStudio - As far as I know it's fine for Win7 so I'm not sure what to say about that either (I'm running neither LogonStudio nor Win7).  If you're interested in it you might want to get some clarification.

The games showing on Stardock Central is new to me.

DesktopX version 3.5, I think its 3.5 works great on my machine. Win 7 64 bit. I've had no problems with it.

Wow, great posts on this!  I use Revo here as well and uninstalled My Colors which was stil on my system.  Like GraveDigger, I recently removed all of the apps that were installed with Impulse and reinstalled them using SDC.  I forgot about My Colors though and that is now gone too.  I am really liking SDC so far and no problems even if it is still in beta.  I hope as time goes on that the SD apps are removed from Impulse entirely to avoid confusion.  Thank you GraveDigger for bringing this up.  All of the info is greatly appreciated.  :)

Working fine for me on XP, Vista, and 7.

3.5 Pro is bad. 3.5 non pro is fine.

4 (3.96)   is fine except it neglects to create the themes folder in your public documents directory for DesktopX. It must be manually created.

I realize it's probably too late now, but for others, before uninstalling DesktopX 3.5, you must backup your widgets, objects, and themes. If not, you will lose them. Also, DesktopX 4 will combine the widgets and objects in the object browser. Also, there is no builder/client distinction in 4. They are combined.

Thanks Redneck, I was hoping you'd clarify the DTX status, I had really become completely unclear on it.  Also nice to know that MyColors is still hanging in there.

While I've noted that MyColors works with Windows 7 there are few suites that actually look correct - they were designed for Windows XP and earlier and don't really take advantage of the look of Windows Vista/7 - it appears to be another situation where a great idea was passed by when a new version of the OS was developed.  Look at the situation for Windows Gadgets - the sidebar was a major development for Vista, improved on in 7 and appears to be abandoned by Microsoft for the future release of Windows 8 (I know that there are actually gadgets available in the "desktop" of Windows 8, but Microsoft has removed most of the gadgets from their website and is focusing on "newer technologies"). >:(

Regarding DesktopX, it seemed like an idea that Stardock tried to push for several years but it never really caught on - the suites never developed as much as I'd like and when Windows 7 introduced Desktop Themes it seemed to reduce the need for much of the customization community.  Windows 7 is actually a very good looking OS and between all of the themes that are available online and in Microsoft's personalization gallery it's easy to find a new look that is extremely stable as well as unique.

Hopefully Stardock is working on new ideas for Windows 8 (although I must admit after trying the consumer preview I'm not so hot about that OS yet...)

I guess I can understand the confusion RedneckDude - I just don't think that DesktopX ever lived up to the potential it had.

Having come along during the Windows 98 era, it represented a powerful tool to customize the desktop.  However many people became confused when the Macintosh started seeing colorful widgets appear via Konfabulator (which later became Yahoo Widgets).  These appeared to be far simpler for most people and when Apple incorporated a similar idea in their Dashboard which was part of Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) it added to the confusion.  Konfabulator was ported to the Windows platform and suddenly you could choose between these and other programs (Kapsules, Avedesk, Samurize, Google Desktop Widgets) to customize your desktop.  Then Microsoft added the Windows Sidebar in Vista and expanded on the idea in Windows 7.

So I never saw much need to use DesktopX - especially after I switched from Windows XP to Windows Vista then Windows 7...

The DesktopX gallery here at WC seems to show that it caught on.

I recently removed everything related to GameStop

and installed Stardock Central along with all of the programs. I had 2 older preograms, (DriveScan and Enhanced File Dialog) and inadvetantly uninstalled them when I removed GameStop.
