COULD Sins have a pro scene?

COULD Sins have a pro scene?

So I've been wandering around the forum lately and I've noticed a bit of chat about the lack of a pro scene for Sins. People are somewhat divided on the issue, but the idea that Sins cannot have a pro scene due to multiplayer game length and unbalanced maps seems to be gaining a certain amount of traction. I just thought that I'd take a look at the possibility of creating a Sins pro scene, how such a thing might be possible, and any ideas people may have for creating such a scene. Also, I shall take a look at the arguments that say that this would be impossible.

So. I have heard some people say that it doesn't matter how skilled you are, if you end up with the short end of the stick on an unbalanced map, then you're screwed.  A real pro would be able to adapt to the situation. He/she would be able to expand to a certain degree and could be able to make up for a bad start with planning. If you don't like your starting region, go colonize some other planets and make another capital.

I have also heard that a Sins game simply lasts too long to be of any interest for someone to watch. First off, I'd like to note that an average chess tournament match can last two and a half hours. And if you're playing in something more advanced than a middle school or elementary school tournament, you probably have some skill and could be considered something of a pro. Second, professional sports or games are not always designed to be conducive to the viewer. I am a soccer fan myself, but I am sympathetic to the claims of my friends that a soccer match isn't always fun to watch, since having two goals in an hour and a half can be underwhelming. But the players in those matches are still pros with a large amount of skill, regardless of how much people like to watch them.

So. Sins itself is already something of an unusual game. And maybe an unusual game deserves some sort of unusual (by the standards of a professional SC2 clickfest match) pro scene. We as a community have a large number of skilled players out there. We just need to talk to each other and get the ball rolling on creating some sort of professional thing for the truly professional members amongst us. If an entertaining youtube video fought between RagingAmish and some other pro is your goal, than simply break the video up into chunks based upon developments in the game to reduce video length. If we want some sort of professional league, than maybe we could talk to Ironclad or Stardock about setting up something along those lines. I'm tired of hearing people whine about how we can't have a pro scene. What I would like to see is people taking the energy they put into whining about the lack of a pro scene and putting it into reasoned suggestions on how to create a pro scene. So. Make suggestions. That's what this post is for.

Thanks for all of you who actually will bother to make suggestions on this thread instead of telling me that I am ignorant, uniformed, or simply naive.

Yes, This can be a pro scene game, ironclad just has to want it to be one and do some extra work in order to do so.

if ironclad makes a pro map pool, decides to balance the game, and promises a ranking, ladder, quick match system some time in the future ill be one of the first ones to hold a tourney on Team Liquid.

also, itd be amazing if they offered obs for casters, an apm counter, a production tab. and mini map.

its still up to them more than anything else.

they have made it clear they will not put in any additional effort to make mp anything more than barely acceptable

I am a huge fan of Sins, and would love a 'pro scene'.

I understand why IC won't fiddle anymore with MP than they have to with a limited playerbase. Let's be honest to them it would be a waste of resources to put effort into something that is likely not to give any return, they're a company after all and companies need to make money, not lose it, in order to keep doing what they do :) They need incentive and as it stands there isnt any.

But that does not make it impossible and I suppose any pro scene would have to be started by the community and have at least moderate proven success before IC would consider being part of it.

I only ever played AI games (guess I'm a noob by definition then.. haha) and I am not much of a map-maker (no experience - never tried) but as I am so in love with with this game and as I wish to play online and be entertained by people far better than I (better at gaming, as nobody is better than me IRL...lol) I'd love to be part of a group or whatver you wish to call it working towards a 'pro-scene'.

My first thought was a need for replay casting. Would require volounteers of course but I am sure there's some charismatic someone with a silky voice, a weird sense of humor and without a need to draw breath out there, who could handle it. There would also need to be a youtube channel dedicated to this purpose, and if were smart about it tudou and youku channels too (chinese - gaming is growing insanely fast here and exposure in China might help the situation along)

I dont know about the rest of you, but I would love to watch replay casts. I watched A LOT of SC2 replay casts by day9, CynicalBritt and Husky and though I cant really play SC2 I found it to be kingly entertainment and at my university we had a group of magic the gathering players (about 12) who made it a bi-weekly occurance to stream youtube and live casts on a big screen in one of the (almost) available auditoriums.. (strictly speaking we werent allowed but what mom doesnt see... right?:)) And I think that with the right 'crew' this has to be the first step. Granted SC2 and HoN and what not all have functions supporting this greatly, but if we really want this to happen, and encourage the devs to work on multiplayer, I am sure we could find a way around it in the beginning.

I too would love a pro scene to emerge, most have hit it on the head, there's not a lot of drive to get better if people continually play 4s and 5s.

Ideally all it would take is a decent map pool, 8 maybe? 4 1s 3 2s and 1 3s for now, then expand if the interest is there. It would spark new clans, i can't imagine it would take much to get a 1v1 and clan ladder running..

Hell i'd be happy to host one on clanwars.cc if the interest was there..

I agree with aGaVa, someone should make a few maps which are fair to all players. Use these maps to make tourneys out of and see where it goes from there...
