Friday Poll: Outlines or No Outlines

Friday Poll: Outlines or No Outlines

By default, Fallen Enchantress draws a black outline around units, buildings, and mountains.

However, if you go into options and click on the video tab, you can choose “disable outlines”.

For those of you who are in the beta, let us know which you like better – with outlines or without outlines.

When I eventually removed the outlines, I found the game much prettier, especially the cities. I'd personnally rather have them off by default.

Visually, I like the black outline slightly better, but I would gladly do without it for any reasonable performance gain.

Although I don't have the games and am not in the beta, I have to say that I dislike the outlines very much. It's nice that it's an option. But generally, the artistic style is what made me decide not to purchase WoM in the first place. From the technological point of view, it is rather awesome, but for me, artistic style is half of the game...

Mind you, most people who are playing it probably like the outlines, since they decided to stick with the game.

Choice is good, but I prefer the black outlines.

Kongdej, you  DO  have the ability to remove the black outlines.  3/4 of the way down in the left column is the Choice:  "Disable outlines" .  If you highlight that box (turning it yellow), the black outlines will be removed.   The result shows up best, when you zoom in on the landscapes and figures.  Give it a try !

I don't mind either way but I have them on.

Having looked at outlines, It was a nice flavour to elemental with a cartoonish way of looking, but I have an easier time notice some of the better graphics without outlines... Also WHY do having outlines enabled make all shadows darker? (Mostly tree shadows)...

In general, if I had to choose, I would have to choose the one that is best for performance, its not that big and issue since I like the graphics :D.

I think this is without, thats why i go vote without.

I voted for the outlines, but now that I've gone back into the game and switched them off, back on, and off again, I can't say that I care enough to justify my vote.  I agree it should be left as an option.

Murteas, that is a pretty cool 'Elemental' Flag ... perhaps a take on the Naga design?

I really think there should be a flag like that

I'd select it for at least one Custom Civ.

I got a cool plug-in to Gimp that lets me make flags for elemental, and then I took one of the elemental art pictures and took the Ignys out of it.  If you are interested in having a copy, send me a pm and I'll send it your way.  I may release a flag/banner pack in the near future with some of the others I've made.

I voted without.  I don't care one way or another for the looks, they are both good, but appreciate any perfomance gain.  Even better if we have the option to set it the way we like.

A flag/banner pack would be very nice.  :D

Having turned them on and off several times, I... can't tell enough of a difference one way or another.  Despite (or is it because of?) this, I vote to keep them on by default.

I'm pro-outline. Can't turn them on, performance issues, but they look great.

Leave the outline by default and give the option to remove them.

The only drawback of outline is that it darken the screen. But everything look pretty dark right now so it fit with the general idea of fallen enchanteress. People who needs processing power will simply remove them.

This whole vote thing is going nowhere. Why not do something more democratic. In my country we mask the issue and then oversimplify it with catchphrases. Let's talk more about whether or not the player has the right to choose outlines on or off. One side could come from the perspective that giving the player the right to choose increases the personal experience of the game. Another side should probably point out that most players need the restriction of not having outlines. They would say that the average player will make an uninformed choice and possibly bog down the game, causing a crash to the desktop. They might say that the choice should be a practical one made by the developer to save memory and stop needless crashes.

We could call the first one Pro-Choice. The second could be called something like Pro-Stability or Pro-Life. Now we can discuss this in an angry circular conversation, quoting development manuals from Win95.

O:)

Cel-shading in general feels very 2010, but I think the game loses a bit of its style without the outlines. I say turn them on.

What he said.

I liked the outlines in WoM because it felt like part of the overall artistic style of the game. I know some people felt the world was kinda empty feeling, but I had some great screenshots when I zoomed way in (no zoom limiting) and made the capture low to the ground to highlight the hills or the peasants (back when there were some). I'm not married to the idea of the black outlines, but given that FE doesn't really have an artisitc style separate from WoM, I feel we might as well keep them.

Performance is far more importian to me, since my computer isn't most powerful, but don't get me wrong, I do like outline. but it's just make my game lag...not like lag, it's turn me off, but good looking importian as well.

Just started up a new game purely to toggle the option and on and off a couple times, and I really don't find it makes much difference either way.. So mark me down as indifferent I suppose.

I have to agree I don't see much of a difference.

And that is why it would be nice if they include it to be able to turn them off, or if they declude them, then for more powerfull computer being able to turn them on.
They allready have the fantastic feature written :).

Stardock, give me an "Outlines" feature to the real world...

I have checked the difference on appearance between outlines and no outlines, and I prefer outlines, BUT still want the OPTION to switch between both states
