No, AT&T, that’s not 4G

imageAs some of you know, the latest iPhone update caves into AT&T’s request to have their HSPA+ connections labeled at 4G.

AT&T: I’ve used 4G. I’ve spent lots of time with it. You sir, are not 4G.

When I use my iPhone for data and I’m using AT&T’s “4G” network, it is note terrible. It’s definitely a fast 3G. I get typically 3 to 5 Mb/sec.

However, when I use my LTE hotspot with it, I get 15 to 20 MB/sec. THAT, to me, is 4G. It is a huge experience difference too.

AT&T has already admitted to throttling IPhone users so this is not any thing new. LOL

I work in this industry so don't get me started.  None of the carriers provide true 4G.  4G is defined as 100MB/sec.  Verizon's LTE is the closest thing, but even they are not quite there yet.

Verizon and Sprint were the first to fib about it so T-Mobile decided they should too.  Not to be outdone, the AT&T marketing machine decided that they must tell everyone they have 4G even though they don't.

In a year or two, someone will get around to updating that text string to 5g so everyone can "have that" too.

Yep.

'4 G' ... an interesting marketing concept.

I wonder what they will call it once they actually reach 4 G ... 6 G? 4 G extreme!!!?
