Download size?

Hi all, Highspeed Internet is slow and limited here. I need to know the download size of the beta before I buy it. I may just have to wait (years?) until a DVD version becomes available but I'm trying to figure something out. Thanks.

It's around 2GB, Sins isn't exactly a big game by modern standards.

Well the Local File size in steam is 2145 MB. Don't know how much it needs to download though.

Thanks. Yeah but if you're limited to 5GB a month that seems big-- esp. if you have to reinstall it. My idea is to get a 4g modem and try to use the sim from my iPad to give my pc Internet access but if that doesn't work I'm limited to getting a 5GB 4g account, guess I could pay overage occasionally but with betas reinstalling can be a way of life. Not to mention I have doubts as to 4g speeds being but much better than 3G here but other wireless Internet around here is 1/2 the speed of 3G with a 2 yr contract and $500 install...rural living can be a pain sometimes. I wonder once I get steam, install rebellion etc. Can I use single player without an Internet connection or does steam require you to be connected to the Internet when starting a game?

You can play singleplayer in offline mode, though this does require you to save your steam account details.

If you log into steam and set it to save your account details, you can run steam in offline mode, and since Rebellion single player doesn't require internet, you can indeed run the game without being online.

As for uninstalling and reinstalling, have you considered investing in a flash drive or other forms of storage for your games?

(Also you could skip the beta and just download the full game when it's done, unless you're really deadset on beta testing.)

Steam shouldn't need a internet connection to start a game once installed and activated.

If you're worried about steam occasionally updating and downloading stuff you can turn off a games auto updating and have steam in offline mode. Though a lot of people say that this doesn't work and have to block steam with a firewall.

Thanks all! I have plenty of backup (several terabytes, I keep all my video on hard drive), but I see one of the solutions to a problem with the beta is to uninstall and then reinstall it. From what I've read I didn't think steam would let me reinstall a fresh install from a backup only from the original source, but then I know little about steam...Trinity is the only game I play, for now. I'm not too worried about what steam puts on my PC it's mostly for converting and editing video and sins, no personal info on it and I can always firewall if I get too annoyed :). Yes waiting for the final release or a release on DVD may be my only options, but I'm trying to figure a way around that. Sure trinity has lots of play left for me as I enjoy huge games with a bunch of opponents in single player, but I'm getting Titan envy. I may just have to bite the bullet and pony up that extra $10/GB but I hate to see all that money go to AT&T instead of star dock. I sure hope they will release a DVD option for those of us with crappy Internet options (I'd be more than happy to buy a $45 version right from star dock if they would send it to me on DVD). Even better if I could keep the money and get it all free but that's a different universe. Of course if steam would let me download to my iPad I could then just install steam on the PC, transfer rebellion to the pc and then if I could tell steam to use the local copy to install instead of going for it online, I'd be all set, but the world doesn't seem to be this er...simple. Last recourse would be to drive the 60 miles to the nearest wifi spot and run my pc and smallest monitor off an inverter in my car and that's assuming AT&T wifi hotspots don't block steam from setting up. Just the thought of lugging my full tower pc down to the pickup makes my back hurt though. Wish someone would hurry up and invent a transporter. Again thanks for the ideas.

Some games I've bought online have the option for you to pay extra to get a copy shipped to you. It's usually only a cheap burned disc with a install executable or something simple like that. I've rather fond of that solution myself and it wouldn't be expensive at all for Stardock.

Yes, that's what I was trying to say. I'd pay an extra $15 for a DVD. Eventually I expect it will go onto DVD like trinity so newegg et. el. can sell it and pickup impulse buyers, but that might be years and my Titan envy will be uncontrollable by then. The Internet world is still very unequal and a lot of people still don't have good options for large downloads.

I live in Canada, so I know how you feel. Mind you I live in the city. As far as I know I am downloading this game at school because Internet cost so much here. I feel you buddy. On the bright side, at least they know how to keep patch size down. I mean unlike iOS updates, which are like 150+mb for like 20 lines of code, patches are only 10mb max, because it mostly code. However, most of the space used is pretty much textures and models these days.

The download is only 1GB, I watched it as it downloaded. Was curious as to how large it is. When the game installs its 2GB mind you.

Thanks I was wondering how much it was compressed. I didn't know about the patches, since my pc is on dialup I never bothered to update Trinity figuring it would take too long but if they are true patches I'll have to check that out. Yeah, I hate the way apple does updates. Same for apps if one line of code changes the whole app gets resent. You'd think a company so worried about bandwidth that you can't get anything over 20MB from them via 3G would use delta updates. Too bad about prices in Canada maybe things well get better if consumers rise up and demand better pricing structures (it has happened before).

Delta updates are there now, as of 5.0. Also I'm pretty sure the Sins patches are deltas, or at least approximations of that.
