Astounding 5000 lag in Multiplayer

Hey there,

So i have been an avid online gamer for a while now playing BF3 and starcraft 2 quite a lot. I have never seen my ping go over 50. Yet for some reason whenever i connect to Sins and try and join a multiplayer game, my ping reaches levels of 2000 and today 5000. This obviously means something is off, i don't know whether it is my trace route or my university firewall that is causing this. Please help i really want to get in on the larger 5v5 maps.

TIA

Raz

It's OVER 5000!!!

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist the nerd in me. Maybe check your connection to pingtest.net it's a line quality test to see if you're dropping packets. To be honest, that's the only thing I can think of that would account for such a high ping. http://pingtest.net/

A firewall would block it entirely or not. They may have implemented packet shaping but even then, we're talking pings maybe around 130-200 not 2000. try pinging 8.8.8.8

[Windows key + r] -> type "cmd" -> type "ping 8.8.8.8" with out the quotes and see what the delay to google's dns servers are like.

Then you can start examining tracerts to ico's server (though they have nice big fat pipes to them now, so I doubt it's on their end.)

Second thought just hit me; are you on Wi-Fi at your university or a wired connection?

If it's wifi, the university probably has it setup in a mesh configuration. In that case the networks actual backhaul speeds drop to about 100mbit /s, get 3-5 people streaming HD youtube or netflix on the same node you're on and that would show pings similar to what you're looking at.

I'll stop posting for awhile (tehe)

Not a techie at all, but is there a cable jack in your dorm room so you can get off the wireless?  It might help or not, but give it a shot.  Find out a little bit about the actual wireless units used -talk to techies; they might be great units strained by many users or crap units heavily strained by many users.

Good luck trying a starbucks or other internet cafe, but there might be a Lan gaming company near you enter you zip code and good luck.  Nothing in my area, but I can drive to SF or LA area... NOT!

Thanks for the prompt replies guys, the connection is wired. i did a traceroute to google as well which doesn't really prove much lol. I tried pinging the ico.stardock.com server and it timed out, i dont know if these are the correct servers though.

Here's a screenshot of what's going on. I have never had this happen before with any other game.

cmd promp shell

Maybe you would have a better chance of receiving help from someone at Stardock if you posted in the Technical forum.  They do actually read these forums and respond sometimes.  You could also attempt to hook up with someone from Starock on their IRC channel.  I think it's at:

irc.stardock.com

I'm having the exact same problem, also behind a college router.
