Beta First Impressions, Bugs, and Feedback

Dear Stardock,

WELL DONE! I was finally able to pry myself away from the game after four hours due to next turn syndrome. You have outdone yourselves! If this is truly the meat and potatoes, with heaps of gravy yet to come, you are blowing my mind! Already, it feels far more complete and alive than WoM. The world in WoM felt desolate and lonely. This world feels much more alive. There is so much to explore! The research and traits are really varied and interesting. You just HAD to keep the rats quest, didn't you! :P

I have yet to have a crash or glitch, save from the minor one mentioned below. Much respect to you! Frogboy, it was a stroke of genius to bring the man who brought us Fall from Heaven on board. While I know it has been a team effort, this game has shattered my expectations, and has the potential to be a classic like MOM. Kudos, sirs!

A couple of bugs/fixes:

  • Having enabled the build view, if you go to the build screen in a city and it switches to build view, then click on the city details button, upon exiting, the build view does not revert to the isometric view. A reload fixes this, but it would be great if you could prevent that from happening.
  • Typo: Fix the spider silk message from "can be sold to your cities weavers," to, "can be sold to your city's (or cities') weavers. Also, if there some sort of a weaver improvement that I should build before selling it in order to produce silk or is this just telling me to make some coin at the shop?
  • Not sure, but my sovereign has the trait that gives +3 HP when slaying a foe. During an attack, I notice the +3 HP in green comes up before the grey damage. It seems to be taking effect before the unit is actually slain (animation showing such). Might fix that timing.
  • Capitar tried to get me to declare war, and they offered me "63 to convince you of this." 63 what? Please add the unit label to the number.
  • I found throwing knives which equip not as a weapon but as a misc. item that gives you the ability to throw knives from 3 tiles out. I have not been able to figure out how to use this. Perhaps it is not actually implemented? Or must I equip a dagger weapon, too?

Questions:

  • Is there a way to raze an outpost? If not, please make this an option. I built an outpost near some resources, only to decide to build a settlement there instead. The darn outpost is in the middle of my city and I can't get rid of it.
  • Are the magic spells in the research tree random? I only have one research that will grant me three air spells. Does this give my sovereign the ability to cast air?
  • Does imbuing a champion cost me anything besides 25 mana? Does imbuing a champion allow my sovereign to cast spells from their circle? In battle after imbuing a water caster, my sovereign (Gildar=earth and life) can now cast the fog spell.

Ok, back to the game! Cheers!

Impressions & Comments

- Glad to see the whole build house, farm & repeat is gone!

- RPG/CRPG elements, sorry to see marriage removed and a complete lack of any new RPG/CRPG elements, the character system in Distant Worlds - Legends has more RPG elements!

- Leader/Champions can't die now, that's just lame!

- Seems like WOM 2.0, what's really different, not seeing a whole lot new here.

- Ok, it's a beta but, it still crashes/hangs, I really hope it is just bugs and not the crappy WOM game engine!

- I don't like having to run around with big armies just to kill a couple of creatures or go exploring would rather see a band of named characters go exploring/adventuring and just use armies for city attack/defend.

- Research is dull, click next, would really like to see some randomness.

- Magic system is dull, no real magic here,  it goes for being too weak to over powered, no balance, no randomness. There is no real difference between air, earth, fire, etc. Add Scrolls, magic sites, healers, potion/potion makers, etc.

- Combat system is still lack luster, units need more options, hide/ambush, lay traps, bind, taunt, capture, run away, etc.  Add a morale system.

 - Quests system, so far it's the same old stuff!

- Docks but, still no ships? Are island maps and ships really that hard to implement (2 + years now)?

- Explorers are useless they can't even explore, right now you need an army to go exploring.

- I still find it odd, in a world of creatures, there is no creature expert or any other option then to kill them, how about a champion/hero (aka beast master) with the skill to trap/capture, train, domesticate them!

-Still no way to upgrade units, what's the point of leveling army units if you can't up grade them with new weapons and equipment?
