I'm curious about this as well.  Is the required internet connection a beta-only thing?

Yes. Online only play is only for the Beta.

That way they can patch the game quickly and efficiently.

Otherwise, there would be beta testers that hadn't downloaded the latest version and might be posting bugs that had already been fixed.

Much easier this way.

The betas are built to download some of their data from the servers on launch, in part so we can patch the data dynamically if need be. The release version will not have that Internet dependency.

More in-depth updates to the game (i.e. new betas) will be delivered (in the coming days/weeks) as patch/update installers to be applied on top of the beta1 base.

I just got that message and my internet was working just fine.

I went and deleted FE from my hard drive and then reinstalled it and I still get that message.  Which is strange because it worked just fine for the first couple of days.  Well, hopefully the problem will be fixed with an update.  This has been the only real problem I have had with the game.

did you try running it with the suggested parameters?

HOW do you run it with those parameters?  I have never had the game ask for ID or password.

Figured it out.  If you get this screen press control and tab.  On the window that comes up press login and login to the game with your current ID and password.  Then restart the game and you dhould be OK.
