A Coward but not a Criminal (Rant)

By now, you all have probably heard of the cruise ship accident that happened over the weekend. The accident claimed the lives of 11 people so far, but this number is likely to go up as many more people remain missing. If you haven't heard anything about it, I posted a link to a news article telling about the disaster.

On Saturday, the cruise ship's Captain was arrested. What was he arrested for you may ask? Well, no official release has stated just what he has been charged with. Instead, all that we head is how he got off the boat several hours before the boat finally capsized. Now this may make the guy a scumbag for not staying to coordinate the evacuation, and your free to judge him on those terms. However, unless I'm mistaken, being a coward is not a crime in any country in the Western World.

In fact, one man praised the captain, talking of how he was speaking in 5 or 6 languages, urging people to "Remain Calm". But this has all been drowned out by all the news stories of how he was a coward, that he got on the first life boat that he could. I caution everyone, that we shouldn't move to judge someone. History is litered with rushes to judgements and I'm sure that you can come up with quite a few on your own.

So I caution everyone, that before we crucify the guy, lets wait until a thorough investigation is conducted.

Theres my rant, and I'd like to know what you guys think on the topic.

If the company gave the captain orders to sail too close, then they got what was coming to them.  That's a $6 billion liner sitting on its side.

I hate to say it, but I'm profiting from the disaster.    Carnival Cruise Lines stock plummeted to $30 on the news, and I bought 100 shares just because Carnival gives free on-board money to any stockholder who also sails on a cruise.  The stock has already bounced up $1.50 since then.

But oh, the cruise ships passengers made out like a bandit, too!   Oh yes!   For all the passengers' trouble, Costa Cruises decided not just to refund their cruise fare--they also decided to give them a 30% coupon valid towards their next cruise!   Doesn't that make you all wish you all were on that cruise and almost died?

Damn....I dabble in stocks and I didn't even think to snatch any up after the accident. I could kick my-self right now.

I've had it on my mind to buy Carnival stock to get free on-board credit for quite some time now.   I just happened to act when the disaster struck.  It's not a day-trade for me, though--I intend to hold it and cruise a few times.   You know, if you think about it:   $3000 up-front investment, cruise 3 times, $100 ship onboard credit 3 times, on cruises you were going to cruise anyway...that's a 10% return on your money right there.

No.

I think he was being a bit sarcastic. Plus, why would you want to cruise with them after that? And good stock tip.

Exactly in which fantasy land are stocks in this Cruise Liner Co going to go up?

I'd expect there'll be a bigger 'death toll' from amongst the creditors when they see their investment on the rocks alongside this boat.

I won't go into stock tips (wrong forum).   However, my point is that Carnival  (the *PARENT* company of Costa Cruise Lines) offers a flat $100 ship onboard credit to cruisers who are also stockholders.  You have to own at least 100 shares.  So if the stock was $1, it's like you'd own it for free.  The stock is nowhere near $1 a share, but still it tanked.  It's a good time to buy the stock to get the credit.  And since it's the parent company, this is valid on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, and I think Holland America.  You don't have to cruise on the Italian cruise lines like Costa and MSC, which were notoriously bad BEFORE this all went down.

With a write-off as big as that tub I'd imagine some unhappy brokers at LLoyds, too ....;)

All that aside, once the ship is cleared imagine what the salvage company will rake in to recover the ship. As big as it is it most definitely will not be an easy move.
