Lightroom 4 in free public beta

Also, Lightroom 3 heavily discounted. This one via Island Dog (thank you!).

You can give Adobe Lightroom 4 a whirl for free (at least until March 31 when the RTM arrives) according to The Verge.

What’s new?

  1. It’s dropping support for XP. Vista and W7 are supported, Mac OSX, Lion are supported but Lion not in full screen mode.
  2. More support for video files, allowing users to trim clips nondestructively and extract individual frames as JPEGs. Editing adjustments can now be applied to both video and stills.
  3. Lightroom 4 has all new basic controls for highlights and shadows to extract the complete dynamic range from images.
  4. There are also new local adjustment controls, which let users to edit specific regions of an image for items like white balance or noise reduction.
  5. Lightroom 4 adds in geolocation support for images and videos manually, or use data from dedicated GPS devices to sync their photos to the software's built-in Google Map.
  6. Once edited, a new publish services pane allows users to upload to the web without having to export first. Adobe includes support for Facebook and Flickr.
  7. Lightroom 4 is the first version to support the “lossy" RAW file format, which promises to maintain image quality and preserve Lightroom metadata, while shrinking the size of RAW files by up to 75%.

Hankers (thanks, my friend) sent me the really cool “Unveil” Lightroom beta 4 “Unveil” webcast which you can see here:

http://kelbytraining.com/unveil  There’s a download link in the upper right corner of that page.

I hope some really cool Dreams can be done with this new stuff… and while it’s free, take full advantage for whatever!

Well worth a test run.

The "Unveil" webcast shows the huge possibilities this program has... even to book creation and even suggested pricing for such a book... with 180 styles offered.

Appreciate the heads up.

Is the discounted price $299?

On a side note, is there any place to pick up older versions of adobe software for a discounted price? $1,500+ is beyond me right now.

$299 is the full price, the upgrades are usually $99.

I downloaded it but I'm afraid to install it. I might like it to much.

How is this compared to PSP?

It doesn't compare much, this isn't a graphics application.  This is for photographers to organize, process, and distribute images.

Thanks.

I saw the video stuff they added but I just started messing with Lightworks so this would be redundant for me.

It's a bit like Faststone Image Viewer, Po

I have Lightroom 3 and I must say it's not worth the money. Compared to Faststone it's slow and chunky, the only thing I use it for is cataloging my photos. Been so disappointed in Lightroom, I can't even be bothered to upgrade ... sure hope 4 is a vast improvement.

I love Faststone. I have been trying Picassa but it ticks me off. I don't need every damn image on my PC in a gallery and it catalogs everything before I can stop it. I've been using Faststone for years. I wish they plug-ins or something for uploading, but it would probably just junk it up.

Yes, I use Faststone with all my images, does what I want and how I like it ... and fast

The reason I still (only just) have Lightroom on my computer is because you can have keywords(tags) inside other keywords. When you have a vast reference library it becomes a must.  Something that Faststone doesn't have.

Watch the webinar/Unveiling.

It's far faster and robust compared to LR3 and is quite something.

Basically it's post production software.

Play with the beta. It's free.

I'd also recommend giving it a go. My only experience with adobe software is premiere and photoshop elements 9 and I'm pretty blown over.

shopped this in elements

lightroom 4'd to

It's called, "When Thaddeus Decided To Open A Branch In The Orient"

I find it's great for making a picture cohesive.

I'm kinda shying away from Adobe stuff. Not that the products aren't good and all, its just with their pricing its way over my head even for the older programs. Believe it or not PS7, ten years old, still sells for 699.00 USD. From Adobe anyway, (last time I checked). I use PS 7, in spite of its quirks, and it works well for me but if I had to buy it, no way.
