Master of Orion 2 reverse engineer

Does anyone remember how, in Master of Orion 2, you get the technology off of a ship you captured in battle?

I was hoping to see someone had reverse engineered Master of Orion and totally re-vamped it or something (not that it needed much work).

But yeah, capturing ships... and scrapping them. Too bad they didn't have more security?
