I am a blank slate, mentor me

Hello all,

I'm one of the hopefully many that picked up this game during the steam sale and am looking for tips or someone to "show me the ropes" for this game. I've been a pretty big fan of Chris Taylor's other games (Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander 1 & 2) but this will be my first serious foray into this DotA style, though my brother is a big LoL fan. I've played the demo when it first came out, so I have a little bit of knowledge of what's going on, but not much. As such, I'm pretty much a blank slate that's willing to learn and give this game a shot. In return, I can mentor you in Supreme Commander 2, if you'd like :).

So far, I've played about 2 offline games (so I dont even have the two new DGs unlocked), watched some guides, and have gotten the mod pack that was stickied at the top of the forum.

I'm fairly free this month, and my steam ID is the same as my forum name for those that wish to add me and do some games.

Practice a lot in single player, read forum strategies, be able to beat the nightmare AI with the enhanced AI mod on. Contact me IG (same name) if you ever feel like playing and chatting.

Kingbingos three steps to greatness.

1: Play single player with the enhanced AI mod on until you are sure you are good.

2: Play some noobs and trash them. Get a decent %.

3: Use your decent % to get into some experienced games........ where you will be totally and utterly annihilated ....... then you watch the replays, this is when you really start to learn the game.

Take it from me, if you have 200 games and you regularly watch replays from teams that outclassed you, you will be better than someone that has 800 games that never watched a replayed from a superior player.

Indeed, some players I know watch the replay from every game they lose before they play again.

What should I be looking for in a replay? Since I'm rather new at this, I'm not well versed in the dota meta-game. For example: when I need to farm, when I should push, when I should hold a lane vs helping a teammate with another. If you showed me a replay now, I would have no idea why a team won other than "well, they were able to level up faster" or "well, they were coordinated."

Also, what do you mean by %? Is this related to the ladder?

That's 2 pretty good starting places. ))

Watching the replays is a good piece of advice, but playing with tier 1 players is the key. When you are less nooby, find yourself a nice easy-going one that is willing to coach you :) My mentors were iamKira, ppapanek, renz, and, later, McShane and nnnils. You'll get shouted at, no doubt, but if they'll see you are willing to learn and progress, they will be quite supportive of your efforts, trust me.

So I should play with some noobies and then come here to ask for help?

Also, where are the user profiles saved at? I have 2 computers that I intend to play on but have the standard 150 favor points on one computer.

If you play internet games, your favor points are stored online so you shouldn't have that problem then. Or are you referring to Single player skirmish? In that case, I'd like to know too. I used to "hack" my SP copy back when I played 1.2, but I've forgotten where it was. It was some setting file somewhere you could edit to give yourself single player valor points.
