GalaxyForge and Mods

Okay this is due to a recent problem I had making a Forge Map and trying to play it using the Sins of a Galactic Empire mod on Entrenchment. I've placed the Galaxy file in the GalaxyForge folder, however when playing Entrenchment (soge) I'm placed at the wrong planet, a few phase lanes seem to be missing, on top of that my faction wasn't the one I chose to play as (which would be the CIS vs the Republic). I know I've done something wrong, but I have a feeling Forge maps aren't supposed to work with mods, but only the default games. Is this true or did I make a mistake? Solutions appreciated :)

They work with mods, but only with a custom GalaxyScenarioDef.galaxyscenariodef file that has been created with that mod in mind.

How do I make one in that case and where do I put it? I really want to use this map for SOGE but I do not wish to mess up the game.

Tell me if SOGE has its own GalaxyScenarioDef file, please. It would be in the GameInfo folder.

----

The new file goes in the GameInfo folder in your mod.

I just had an idea. What if I move the map to the SOGE folder and place it in that Galaxy folder, then edit the galaxy manifest file to include that map. Will that work also?

It does have a GalaxyScenarioDef file yes, what do you want me to do now? I have the forge map file, but heck if I know what to do.

Replace the GalaxyScenarioDef in GalaxyForge with the one from SOGE...

(Make sure that you keep the original one)

Then make your map anew with Galaxy Forge.

You mean I have to make the whole map again? You have got to be kidding me...

By the way, you said keep the original, I got three options on my screen:

1. copy and replace

2. don't copy

3. copy but keep both files

I guess option three but wont that corrupt entries? I'm a newb with all this Forging stuff, used to just playing the game, heh.

move the original out of the folder

put the new one in, as it only works for SOGE, when you want to make a map for Vanilla, put the original back in.

Yep, remake your map with the new GalaxyScenarioDef...

I'm not well-versed enough in Galaxy Forge to take you through the steps of converting the old one...

C'mon, making your map over again can't possibly even compare to making 490 unique particle effects from scratch... (took me 2 years)

DO IT!

Good luck

What I do is make a copy of the galaxy forge folder, rename it say SoGE forge, then paste SoGE's galaxyscenariodef file, and select copy and replace. That way you can make maps for either Vanilla or SoGE as you please.

It may not be necissary to make it again from scratch if SoGE's galaxy forge is similar enough to the original. Only real way to know is to try and open it with your newly created SoGE forge, and then see how much of it can be recovered.

Thanks, and speaking of the particle effects, anything I need to know about that tool? I have it but not used it yet. Also good Lord at having to re-make this map, perhaps I'll make it even better than the first one.

Now that sounds like quite the plan, thanks for telling me. I took your advice, and now have a SOGE Forge folder with the GalaxyScenario file from the SOGE mod. Knowing how often I play soge, I doubt I'll be using the vanilla forge for a long time, hehe.

Well, off I go to make more maps. Can I share them with others?

Sure, make sure that others know what the map is like and what mod it is made for.

Particle Forge is a rather straightforward complicated tool.

It won't work unless you do some crazy things.

When you want to get into it, PM me or post here

I just read part of that post and i dont think i want to fool with particle effects just yet. Going back to the sharing bit, how would I go about doing that? Is it on this site or somewhere else?

Gamefront.com is a great place to upload your map, and then you could make a thread with screenshots and backstory behind your map...

several other people have done it already.

I am a karma hog.... Karma please?

Wow, I just realized the rather idiotic mistake I made from the first forge map. The option for randomize position, I totally overlooked it and left it set to 'True', which now explains why I didn't spawn in the correct locale. Big FAIL on my end, I know I'm being hard on myself but grrr, I feel silly now.

Randomize Positions...

I could've sworn that it did nothing at all...

Any other forum denizen who can confirm that Randomize Positions does nothing?

Oh it does exactly what is says it does. If its true you can end up in any player slot. If false, the human player will always be player-0, CPU 1 will be player-1 etc.

If only I had known from the start, oh phooey. I gots a new map made, though it might drive a player crazy way I have it setup. Do star connect to one another? If not, I'm screwed...

yes stars connect to other stars

Turns out to be true but with a little catch. See I just finished playing my first Forge Map (like an idiot I forgot a couple phase lanes so I was stranded with a powerful CIS fleet) and the fleet actually jumped from one star to another then a third. However, doing so took near 10 minutes cause appearantly there's no actualy phase lane from Star to Star so they do this weird dance around, fall down under the Star, then face in a nosedive position only to take 3 seconds to 'jump' down to another Star. It was rather bogus and something that NEEDS to be FIXED with either the game (Entrenchment) or the mod SOGE. So anywho I made a second map that fixed the issue of the first one, seems there's also an issue with 2 Wormholes I placed on the 2nd star system and the Forge tool told me to turn those into random objects which I did, only to delete them cause I didn't think that was fair of the editor but go fig.

My laptop has run rather warm and I don't think it's used to the kind of map I just made. Oddly though, I started to get a spawn bug with a few Munificent Frigs but then it stopped. Solution? I deleted as many of 'mine' as the AI was spawning on its own which canceled the lil bug. Another thing, finally the names of ships has stopped being incomplete (capital ships) but I still have the missing icons, and this weird String Not Found crap in several places in game. I don't at all mind the Subjugator not having a complete texture cause she owns all ships.

So I'm done gaming for the night, I'll try Version 2 of the map tomorrow and pray that it works. I like the Forge Tool, but it's too tedious, not easy without a mouse, needs an undo button (so badly), also needs to show an automatic connection between stars so that people will know that's how they work.

Stars are automatically connected by special phase lanes that are actually faster than standard ones. If it was taking them entire minutes you may want to adjust your map scale parameter to make the distance between all phase lanes shorter (the layout and relative distance of the map will not change).

That sounds like an issue with SoGE. The GalaxyForge only lets you control what gets spawned at the start of the game, if starting ships or planets aren't appearing that's something to do with the GalaxyForge. Pretty much everything else is the mod.

For testing your map you may find trying the dev.exe useful, especially the show all entities command ([ctrl+shift+.], then [e] then [c]).

I'm now getting the spawn bug with Rebel Alliance ships, particularly with Nebulon-b frigates. I don't know why this is happening, and it's minor but annoying cause I'm getting ships showing up atleast 1-2 jumps back from where the main fleet is. I don't question the current SOGE as it's a stable release but I've read that it cancels out the three norm factions: Tech, Advent, and Vasari. Problem is, I still have those 3 in addition to the 4 with Star Wars, which according to the ReadMe means I installed wrong, which is NOT the case. I've checked numerous times how to install the mod correctly, I've done nothing wrong, yet I still get the game's built-in races which aren't supposed to be usable when the mod is enabled.

In addition to this problem, my laptop seems to run the game (atleast with the mod) slower than it used to, to the point that I can only use x2 the update speed. I go to x4 things slow down instead of speeding up. X8, well at that point all things might as well be frozen. I don't doubt my laptops capabilities, nor the game engine, both of which were made for eachother but something has gone wrong. First got this game, it ran smooth as silk. Nowadays, I have to take breaks to allow my laptop to not only cool-down, but catch up with...I dunno processing speed I guess? I'm not tech genius, which sucks cause I'd rather know what is wrong instead of the 'post for help, wait for help, try solution, repeat' process involved on the internet.

It's a nightmare, last thing I want to do is un-install the whole game, and the mod yet again (did it once already). Reason why was I installed the mod rather incorrectly and got spooked so I wiped the game away plus the mod and re-installed everything slowly and carefully. I understand a new version of SOGE is in development and currently in closed BETA, but I can't wait for some new mod to come out, I need answers now. I will however, look for alternative mods to try out in the meantime, and will temporarily disable SOGE (I really don't want to). Sucks to be a Star Wars fan and have the perfect mod, only said mod has all these damn bugs (although small) get really annoying!
