From Today: Automatic Update to IE 9 Across W7, Vista and XP

MS will not ask. They’re killing all previous versions of IE. You can read about it here:

“Today we are sharing our plan to automatically upgrade Windows customers to the latest version of Internet Explorer available for their PC. This is an important step in helping to move the Web forward. We will start in January for customers in Australia and Brazil who have turned on automatic updating via Windows Update. Similar to our release of IE9 earlier this year, we will take a measured approach, scaling up over time. As always, when upgrading from one version of Internet Explorer to the next through Windows Update, the user’s home page, search provider, and default browser remains unchanged.”

Their reasoning? To make the web safer for personal and commercial usage:

“We want to make updating to the best protection possible as fast and simple as we can for Windows customers. IE is how millions of Windows customers connect to the Web, so keeping that part of Windows updated at all times is critical to keeping them safe online. With automatic updates enabled through Windows Update, customers can receive IE9 and future versions of Internet Explorer seamlessly without any “update fatigue” issues.”

They cite various Security experts in justifying their decision:

“Jeremiah Grossman, Chief Technology Officer and founder of WhiteHat Security agrees as well, saying…

"Automatic updates are a very good idea based on every piece of security research I've seen. Keeping software up to date - particularly Web browsers - is critical for online security. With that in mind, I'm pleased that Microsoft is moving toward an automatic update model, particularly since their approach balances the needs of enterprise customers who still need a mechanism to manage software updates." - https://www.whitehatsec.com/

However, you still have control. You can get the ie8 or ie9 Automatic Update Blocker tool kit:

No biggie to me as I am a user of IE 9 have been for awhile, I have have 2 W7 64 Bit machines with IE 9 and One Vista 32 Bit machine with IE 9.

My Browser of preference is Fire Fox. I also use Pale Moon and Chrome and Comodo Dragon

I switched to Palemoon a while back (thanks to DrJBHL) and very happy about it. But I often see people like yourself saying that they use several browsers regularly, and I have to ask why? If you're a web developer I understand you'd have them installed for testing purposes, but why go to the hassle of using different browsers for your daily internet usage?

I use ie8 and am very happy with it, tried many others and have always reverted back to ie. I like the cookie  and add-on managing controls and have found it safe and secure.

I guess the safe thing for me to do is leave automatic updates to notify only cause I don't think I feel good about the html5. I can disable flash to reduce the annoyance but I believe that html5 is kind of like a replacement to flash and I'm don't think you can disable that???

just read the article, this was a part;

Similarly, customers who have declined previous installations of IE8 or IE9 through Windows Update will not be automatically updated. Customers have the ability to uninstall updates and continue to receive support for the version of IE that came with their copy of Windows.

If it is safer and more secure, than I do not understand the reluctance to update. I have been using it along side of Firefox since it first came OUT AND DO NOT HAVE PROBLEMS WITH IT. I am not a fan of change but when it is for your own good then it makes sense to go with it. :|

I actually have never used IE till 9 came out and found I liked it so use it most of the time now with "0" problems. Always a lot of talk about auto updates. I have to have it turned off. Check it once a week but would rather have it tell me when the updates were ready. My problem is I had office 2007 on here. Got rid of it over a year ago for office 2010. I used Revo, etc but yet Microsoft thinks it's still on my system so with it turned on I get update notifications all day long. I can open it and uncheck them but as soon as I turn on the computer again it starts all over again. anyone has a fix for this I will be happy to try it. BTW. I didn't do and upgrade from 2007 to 2010, I did a full install after I thought I removied all of 2007.

I can only speak for me but it's HTML5. from what I understand, HTML5 is designed and embedded into the browser and provides media content in the same fashion that flash does. flash is not only a resource hog but I hate those ads that are flash based and play when you open up a page. I have flash disabled and only use it when I chose to. If HTML5 does provide that "enhancement" without the ability to disable, then I don't want it. If I can disable HTML5, well, then that might be another story. BUT, I'm not going to download it to find out either.

If you right click the erroneous updates and select "hide" you will not see them again. Trust me, it works for all updates that you do not want to install or see again. :inlove: |-)

That might not be so for the IE9 "offering".

IE9 sucks compared to chrome but it certainly is better than ie7 and 8 - especially the 32bit version.  I sure hope when they force this to 64 bit machines that they make sure it's the 32 bit version they push or they are going to have a lot of unhappy campers.

I respect anyones opinion and right. I haven't used IE for many years so tried 9 when it came out. As I mentioned aboue I use it all the time now on 64 bit and have never had a problem. Maybe I'm just lucky or don't use it the way some do.

I think DarkSide73 was referring to speed... the ie9 x64 java engine was pretty broken... so I've been using the x486 and have been quite happy with it.

I also use Pale Moon (x486), Comodo Dragon (chrome 16), and Opera. I enjoy comparing stuff.

Didn't they do the same with IE8 and IE7 at one time? If so then Frankief speaks the truth. Just hide it and you won't be bothered, but.. I guess we shall see.

If this was meant as an answer to my post here is my reply.

I not sure except for numbers how speed is meant. I don't worry about those numbers. all I know is when I push my Object Dock IE icon it loads very fast and I can go right to my keyboard and start typing in the search box if I wish. I'm not saying other browsers aren't good just saying i'm very happy with 9 all around including speed. That's a good thing other browsers are around as it helps to keep things at least a bit honest.
