My update on the game after leaving it for a year

I was one of those tremendously excited when it first came out, and horribly sad both for Stardock and for my purchase after the original buy.  I tried some of the patches and could never get into the game.  It was too bland, buggy, and imbalanced.  I just tried the latest patch, and to be honest, I couldn't stop playing.  It seems solid now.  Certainly it could use a little more to make the cities feel unique or interesting, making the factions feel and look more different, but the general game was a solid, fun, turn based strategy that I kept playing well past the time I should have gone to bed.  Thank you Stardock for delivering on your promise and not abandoning the game.  You have guranteed I will continue to buy your products.  After Elemental and the Galactic civ pack, I almost quite.  But now I'm back to you release it, I'll buy it because I have faith in the company.

I'm hoping the expansion will bring some flavor to the factions and a little more game customization ability, but overall I can keep playing this for awhile and be very happy.

Try Heavenfall's After the War mod as well - finishes the polish and adds alot of cool content.

Yes, After the War is sweet skeet. Don't be afraid to try it.

Yes Havenfall's mod's are highly recommended.  I've used them & had no issues.

The crashing problem is probably due to memory issues especially if you have a newer video card.  Frogboy did a post about why using Pixel Shader 2, trying to be compatible with older laptops, created memory issues that turned out to be unresolvable.  They've moved on to Pixel Shader 3 for FE so all should be well on that front with the new game.

My feelings are the same. Couldn't bear to try previous patches, but 1.4 seems quite interesting. Was up until 4am having some cool fun.

Looking forward to FE, which should rock (I hope).

Will try the mod as people have suggested.

Cheers

Just started a new game with elemental version 1.4 and after the war mod and man its a good game now. I was surprised, but I am playing with a random map created by elementerra 2 so I don't think the game is the same when using the normal maps. I am playing on a super huge map and the AI has lots of room to expand. I am holding my own though but it isn't easy and the AI is only on normal.

Do you have 64-bit Windows and the large address patch?  I think the main problem with big maps is that there can be too many towns and units for the game to handle, and really you need 64-bit Windows and the large address aware patch to run big maps.

Yes, I have 64 bit windows and the large address patch. I am already on season 551 and it is still running just fine. I think the map size is something like 240x220 or something. I of course already knew I needed that, but thanks for the info anyway.

I am also using every faction in my game including all of the extended factions from the mod and a custom faction of my own so theres more then 20 I think. Its great but its a lot of work haha. 4 or 5 factions have already been eliminated though.

Well, that's good!  Just wanted to make sure.  It's good that it is possible to play huge maps if the right conditions are met!
