Not bad for an old game. Goes to show you newness means nothing. ;)

Well, a few flaws with that list. First, how are they the best of 2011 since most didn't come out then? Second, am I the only one that feels that other games should have trumped games like Age of Empires III? Third, how the hell is a Total War game a Real-Time Strategy?

Other than that, glad to see that SoaSE is well thought of.

Indeed, and why on Earth is SupCom only #10? How can DoWII be better than DoW, when they turned it all around? SoaSE definitely earned its place on that list.

No kidding, as I understand it, AoEIII was not a true AoE game.

Total War games definitely aren't RTS games, I haven't even played any of them, and I know that, so how did two of them make it on to such a list?

Total War games have real time battles...but those are generally referred to as tactical battles, so I'm not sure on how those games would be classified....

To be honest, I don't see how Empire: Total War outdid Medieval II or Shogun II (which wasn't even on the list, wtf?)...but that's just my opinion....

A lot of this comes up to opinion and taste.  The only really questionable stuff on this list is the inclusion of AoE3 and the very high placement of E:TW.  I don't have a problem with counting the Total War series as RTS, though you are blurring the lines by doing so.  I tend to think Starcraft II is placing highly because of how new it is and how much hype surrounds it.  I'd probably put it near the bottom of my top 10 rather than near the top.

I'd say my top 3 would be (in order) Warcraft III, Sins of a Solar Empire, and Age of Empires 2.  Not really sure what I'd put at #4; plenty of titles I'd consider.

From the actual site it says the aoe 3 multiplayer community is still alive and kicking. There basing there ranking off whose playing what and how many people are playing certain rts games in 2011

Yes, the descriptions are lacking. The use of the term RTS is loose at best. The games making the list are either fairly recent or have relatives that reminded us how much better the originals were (SupCom2). And then they skip some gems like Homeworld2.

I wouldn't give the list much credibility and hope, despite the brief and inaccurate description, that this manages to be yet another boon for SoaSE.

Clearly if SoaSE is #4, it is only because Entrenchment is #3, Diplomacy is #2, and Rebellion is #1....

But shouldn't that average out to Trinity being #3 or the final batch being #2.5?

That math is TOO HARD for me...

4+3+2=9/3=3

4+3+2+1=10/4=2.5

WHAT IS THIS + and / and = STUFF??????

SC 2 is not my game, but it is very popular. Look at the view counts for replay commentaries by Husky StarCraft and some run into the hundreds of thousands. Lot of fans among college age I think. Just too old here to keep up with the frenetic pace.

Homeworld2 was not a gem, if it wasn't for the interface improvements and strike craft squadrons, it would have been two steps backwards. The voice acting was abysmal, frigates were pathetic, and support was removed. I still use Homeworld as a benchmark for RTS games, and I haven't even beat the campaign yet, because I am always slow to find out about games. Homeworld2 was released before I had Homeworld, and I didn't even know about it for several years.

IMHO Sins >>> Starcraft.  Unfortunately, most of the online multiplayer PvP RTS crowd doesn't seem to know about Sins.  It's a hidden gem IMHO.

I think Homeworld2 still beats a few on the list. But I will say that I liked destoyers and frigates more in the original, I like the support, and I enjoyed the more oddball units that the original and HW: Cataclysm had. I didn't feel too bad about the voice acting and think that the story was a fine conclusion to the hornet's nest that the original opened up. So, I will say that you have a fair argument about HW being better. Play Cataclysm. It's a treat.

Still, since they aren't listing games made in 2011, why not add Homeworld?

And I agree with DirtySanchezz. A rare occasion.

I concur, I would be playing Sins again if my computer liked it.

There are many old games that still have multiplayer communities that are doing well for themselves.  Warcraft II (yes, that's two) online community is still doing fine, and it predates AoE3 by a full decade.

Okay, I dunno why I didn't think of this before. Total Annihilation: Kingdoms. Total Annihilation was cool, but Kingdoms had an amazing story and where most games boast three unique groups (which are rarely all that different) this game had five groups with as little in common as you can imagine. Even to turtle you had to take a different approach with each force. Wonderful game.

edit: Oh, and the 'end game' units are limited to one while not being all that invincible. Although a boon to your forces, they must be used carefully to avoid the long process of resummoning. Great balance.

I though this was a list of rts games released in 2011 not a review of all of the rts games in the history of gaming and then ranking them in order of sales. Clearly even with sins at 4, the OP is clearly biased towards to SCII, I bet if you look at the least when the last two SC gets released the top 3 would be SC. I though Empire: total war was a part RTS TBS so it isn't a true RTS. Honestly, if SC is the king of RTS, its queen is Age of Empires.

The original two. 3 was disappointing, IMO.

I sorta agree, the first 2 ruled, but I kinda understand why they moved to the British era, I mean the first one was like ancient history, then they moved into the medieval era, I guess that is why they moved into the 1800's. Although I love the physics and the graphics.

With regards to world in conflict, the graphics is quite shitty for a game that was developed after a few years after Age of Empires III. Sure it was developed Sierra Entertainment just right before they defunted but still a think if they worked on the graphics a bit more I am pretty sure it would failed like it did.

Looks like its sales and multiplayer activity.
