Is the Homeworld required for YOUR survival

I have a question:

It is absolutely necessary for your home world to be intact for your civilization to survive?

In other words, do you automatically lose if you lose your homeworld?

Because it seems like if you blew up your own homeworld with a Terror Star, you get this funny message:

This is priceless, indeed.

Funny.

But for the record, I don't think you normally lose if your homeworld is lost. It's never happened to me personally, but I've seen AARs where it happened, and they weren't automatically eliminated (although most subsequently lost anyway).

Maybe for GC3 they'll put a little meat on the bones of the government subsystem. Losing your homeworld should end the game for centralized tyrannies, but maybe not for a Star Democracy or Star Federation.

An easter egg for blowing up your own capital with a Terror Star, that could be priceless.
