It is your friend.
Rebellion is just gonna be more of the same with the same running better. If that is to your liking, you will get a lot of it. If you are expecting a radically different game than what we've got now, you'll be let down. It's running on the same engine as now with some tweaks.
Weapons/Mesh Upgrades can be made active with research. I don't think however each ship will have an upgrade mesh, but perhaps.
Just don't let your imagination hype Rebellion up to much, it's SOASE -Diplomacy with Titans.

More planet types: Try 7 Deadly Sins or Distant Stars mod.
New races: Each faction is splitting into two.
Different weapons: That's kinda what research is about.
Customize ships: You can pick a color. That's more than we need for an RTS. If it was smaller scale or FPS, I could see it.
As for lore, without a campaign, it's not really an issue. Just stick to the old Total Annihilation saying: The only outcome for either side is the complete elimination of the other.

So after playing the living HELL outta Soase, rebellion is really exciting e and i had a couple ideas for the expansion.
numerous main points:
1. new planet classes and categories new classes: Gaia- an environmental paradise, with little more green land then water instead of earth like 70% water. much larger pop. cap. Ocean- planets covered in globular oceans (perhaps a suitable homeworld for a new aqua race?) Toxic- Self explanatory, maybe low habitability but high resources Arid- (dry, rocky. ( in between terran and desert) gravity: depending on gravity stenght, the wells' sizes vary
These are called Planet Bonuses in Sins.
2. New factions or race ideas: New human race( one of the TEC's sins was the expelling of the advent. maybe a side story could be added of a group of unwanted people being kicked and forming a faction that is very friendly to aliens) Aquatic Race (would go perfectly with Ocean worlds) insctoids? or any other alien races rather than just
Why? Play a mod if you want more races. Back stories aren't very compelling either beyond what they've already defined. Make up your own back story and play the game, then make up another one. It's more fun that way.

Um... not going to happen with the current memory limitations for mostly cosmetic only reasons.

Why? this wouldn't really add much to the current game play.

I'm not really even sure where this is going. But... If you want to name your ships "Prime" feel free. There is a way to rename capital ships and planets in game or even to mod it in the English.str.

They already have different propulsion and phase jumping cosmetic looks and are apparently getting some more love in Rebellion.

The game already has tactical slots and modules. This would be redundant and marginalize these already existing game features.
Star structures (maybe solar panels to gain resources? give stars more purpose)

Satellites or moons?
Well, turn on planet elevators and you get about the same effect for Satellites. Play Maelstrom mod for moons though in both cases it's purely cosmetic.
Warpgate type of deal for faster travelling new music better voice acting ship crew to crew boarding combat?
I'm not sure how this sentence actually progressed from the original thought to the ending thought! I guess you want faster traveling music capable of voice acting during crew to crew combat?

If you are new to the forums, I AM REALLY SORRY...you unfortunately are not seeing the best side of a lot of people...forums have entrenched, shall I say, etiquette and well, new people really wouldn't have anyway to know these things until they get properly bitched at by the forum regulars...
If you are not new, well...my apologies for being presumptuous...
To someone who has been active on the forums for a while, most of your suggestions seem idiotic and redundant...this is not to say that you are idiotic or that your ideas are completely pointless...it's just that the people reading this post have been around a while, have seen it all, have played or created mods, and therefore what seems new to you is quite stale and boring to most others on the forums...
Two pieces of advice:
A ) Virtually everyone active on this forum falls into two groups: ICO players, and modders. The ICO players are very good at this game, play it a lot, generally know what they are talking about, and don't give a lot of credence to the strategic suggestions of non-ICO people. The modders are well versed in the mechanics of the game, what changes/ideas are possible, what changes/ideas are actually good, and collectively have created just about any non-standard content you could ever want for Sins.
Anyone who does not fall into either of those groups is an outsider...trust me, it sucks, I don't fall properly into either category and therefore putting forth ideas on these forums can sometimes be like walking on egg shells...
There are friendly people on these forums...there also are a lot of jerks, it sucks but that's just how it is...
B ) If you want new things in Sins, make them yourself. There are a lot of mods out there you can use and synthesize to get whatever you want...even better, just make your own mod that implements the changes you desire...this may sound like a lot of work but honestly it is quite easy, just takes a little time to educate yourself on how to do it...I have learned how to fully mod everything in the game except effects and models just from these forums...I am not a serious programmer and am not a prodigal genius, so if I can do it, you can too...the modders on these forums are generally friendly and willing to help so use those resources at your disposal....
Don't be fooled, full mod projects that have lots of changes can take a long time, but the basics of modding are quite simple and most small changes can be implemented in a couple minutes just by changing some text files...I currently use a balance mod that I developed on my own and subsequently I enjoy playing Sins A LOT more...sure, most people probably wouldn't like my changes but I DO and enjoy Sins all the more for it...more to the point, there is a sense of ownership and pride when you play something YOU'VE created (well, modded at least)...so I encourage you to go forth and try and make some of these changes yourself...
I will personally say that I do not think most of your suggestions would add anything significant to the game (and that's only looking at the one's even possible to implement)...but THAT DOESN'T MATTER...if you think the changes would be cool, then make them happen and enjoy yourself...instead of asking whether they are good changes or cool ideas, simply snoop around or ask people how you could implement them in your own mod...believe me, if I admitted to half the ideas I've actually had for this game, I'd throw away what little credibility I have...

I'll assume from the karma count that you're new. If I was harsh, sorry. But if nothing else, I've pointed out two mods that you can look up and try. They might have most of what you want and others you didn't know about. Just keep in mind that, when you look these mods up, you check out their threads as well as any homepages, checking to see what the latest version in and cycling through the last couple of pages if you run across a problem, as troubleshooting happens on the fly.
But yes, a big issue has been the lack of paragraphs. Reformat your writing as you would for a school paper (no need for introduction and conclusion) and you're good to go.

Well, Distant Stars is much more refined in my opinion than 7ds (at this point).
There's also my mod Sins of the Fallen (R5 version for new planets)
Soase Maelstrom (very good mod with very nice planets and races)
Stars (lots of good feedback given for this mod, though I haven't play it personally)
SinsPlus (integrated in a lot of various mods like Distant Stars)
As well as some other very well done mods like SOA2 (Star Trek) and others can be easily found by looking at Rick's Galaxy website which provides links back to the various mods.
i realize some ideas were BS but installing mods mean i cant enjoy those features in mp.

Well, competitive MP is very streamlined with many of the features of Sins going unused.
However, Mods can and are indeed played over ICO. I've played many of the aforementioned mods on ICO with others online.
Well sorry for the harsh comments in that case. I can imagine the paragraphs are sometimes messed up on a mobile phone. I use a Macbook myself and I noticed that he spacings between paragraphs differ from the posts I put on the forum when using Windows.
But like ZombiesRus5 said, it is possible to play matches online while using a mod. Though this only works when every player uses the exact same mod.

Imagine you join the forums, and on your first day as a new member, you create a new thread with all these new ideas you have thought of...these are things you may have thought about for a long time while playing the game and personally believe would be pretty cool....

Okay, we can all agree that typing on a phone sucks and that, being new, he probably hasn't seem the dozen or so 'new idea' threads. So let's try to ease up on each other and just address the OP.
Many of the ideas have been implemented in other mods. Some are more difficult or just outright impossible. Zombie gave you a very good link to use. If you have particular questions, ask on the forum of whatever mod you're interested in.
