Guys, watch out for the toolbar it wants to install. It isn't necessary to install those. Could be spyware.

It wanted to install the ASK toolbar and set ASK.com as my homepage. Uncheck those options.

And I found that after installing and registering, it may still say trial mode until you restart the program. Mine said Trial has ended at the top, then at the bottom it said continue trial.

I clicked that and then restarted it. It now has "register" greyed out in the about section under help. So it should be fully functioning now.

They could make it a tad easier to get registered, but it works and for free.

Agreed, Paul.

I opted out of the tool bar/search engine/Home Page installation. Everone should, and really, it is a perfectly good program which you can use effectively and easily. I just don't know what info is sent, and having Photoshop I figured this wasn't worth the chance.

When installing ANY program, all stages of the installation should be observed closely, and action taken when necessary. You and only you are responsible for your computer.

I just picked up Ashampoo's Snap 5 (as I had Snap 4 installed previously) for $7.99.

Lo and behold, I was faced with the "Express" vs. "Advanced" options. In very faded print, only made clear after ticking the "Advanced" option, the same choices of Snap Tool Bar, Home Page and Search engine appeared and could be "deselected".

In other words, had I chosen the "Express" mode, I would have ended up with the tool bar, home page and search engine changes.

So, I would suggest being wary with any and every software installation, no matter if "free" (never are - end up costing $14.99, on average) or "paid for".

Which gives me an idea for an article.... ;)

Yes, that's the standard option.

ALWAYS look at the 'advanced' or 'expert' install ...as they generally give you the chance to opt out...:0

It doesn't, not here.

It's relevant to skinning and graphic design...;)

Spam? Why on earth would you think that? It's an excellent post... and people are exploring important (although tangential) points.

And the Ask toolbar is one that not only hijacks your default search settings, it is a right royal pain in the arse to get rid of as well.

OK.

I installed the software. I unchecked the OPTION to also install the toolbar.

End of story.

It is NOT a malware issue...unless you are stupid enough to say YES to everything.

Um, Paul... please re-read my post.  I ended up with the Ask toolbar because there was NO notification it was bundled with the image viewer I wanted to try, and thus, NO opt out option.  So no, I didn't have a choice, and yes, it was somewhat problematic to rid myself of it... which is why I posted, with a view to forewarning people so they were more inclined to uncheck the toolbar option.

Yeah, freeware peddlers are more up front about bundling crap than they were back then, but folk sometimes neglect to untick these things and I  just trying to save them the hassle, that's all

:)

Not relevant if you were installing an 'image viewer'.

This thread is about "Photo & Graphic Designer 5" which has the option to NOT install the Ask toolbar etc.

Your reference to it would give people the wrong idea of this specific software....;)

...and yes, it's a pain if you do end up with it.  But there are far worse....a recent file archiving tool actually did everything BUT install the file....I ended up with some shitty aquarium screensaver instead....;p
