How can we tell when new versions are available?

With Stardock off of Impulse entirely...

ObjectDesktop apps no longer update via Impulse.

The download files neither have a version number nor a last updated date.

How can I tell if there's been an updated version since the last time I downloaded?

Announcements are usually made concerning updates to software programs Ynglaur. Keep an eye on the left part of the home page where WC news is posted. I guess it'll be a little while before the transition to a regular down loader is complete but asking doesn't hurt either. Not to worry though, when updates come Admins are pretty good at putting them out there.

A new updater is in developmetn and should be available soon-ish.

One would think that an updater would have been in the works when Stardock decided to sell Impulse. Why not just have the ability to check for updates in each program?. Why should we be forced to install yet another application?. we just want to be able to update our paid software, is that to much to ask? I mean FREE software has this function built in but Stardock programs (or most of them) don't.... go figure. Will the so called new updater just be a way for Stardock to throw advertising at us as well? These and more questions will probably never be answered. yes i am becoming jaded :)

Jaded? Dunno.  Repetitive? Yes.

A single, centralized installer/updater works perfectly well for companies who actually produce more than one or two proggies [ie. unlike 'FREE software'].

It's obvious 'timing' was the factor in Impulse's sale... so there was no opportunity to pre-empt with a next gen installer.

Stardock has never "thrown advertising at us".  The OPTION has always been there to disable.

You have never been "forced to install" anything.

I think I answered them all.

Repetitive?... you show me where i have repeatedly asked about in built updaters

Besides, i really don't think it's too much for the people who spend their money on the product to request useful features to be included. We the customer are after all the people who keep the company in business, so if customers asking for a feature is repetitive then maybe there is a message worth listening to.

Only for subscribers, those who have the free accounts still have to put up with banner ad's... so yes advertising thrown at them unless they pay a subscription fee.

So, are you trying to say that Gamestop rang up one morning and said "hiya, we wanna buy impulse" and at 5pm Impulse was sold?

very unlikely. This sale would have been negotiated over a period of time and stardock would have known that update problems would happen . So the timing thing just doesn't make sense. Maybe they didn't realise that expired subscriptions would be adversely affected after gamestop aquired impulse, But good planning should have been a major factor. :)

Nimbin, get real:

It costs to setup and maintain a site. People who help defray the expense (subscribers) besides the satisfaction of helping support their Community get the benefit of not seeing the advertising as well as unlimited downloads, etc.

People who don't support the site by subscription get 50 Mb of free downloads as a plus, but see the advertising which pays for that privilege and others which aren't paid for by the Visitor/non-subscriber.

There's no such thing as a "free" lunch, or anything else for that matter. That's life.

Guess I shouldn't be making this post but just can't help myself

The name of this thread is How can we tell when new versions are available?

An answer was given in reply #2 A new updater is in developmetn and should be available soon-ish. Actually it's development but who's looking and besides it's a trademark of Zubaz so to be expected.

All the rest of the crap has been said time and time again and there may be an answer but we will never know so time to let it go. Really it's not our business to know if there is an answer. Brad told us not to long ago there would be another means with no time line except it was being worked on. Now we have an answer, soonish. What is soonish? I don't know but if one thinks it means a month then post again and ask how the soonish for the installer is coming. I would think the time to bitch is when there is no answer. Know the old baseball movie "Build it and they will come" Well we were told it's being built so it will come.

As also mentioned, we are being told when there are updates available and this works until we get the installer that hopefully gives us the version # and other information we have been use to having.

In closing I will say this. There are lots of forums, places to upload work, etc. available for free. I have looked at many of them and found none like this palce. This is a real community with many members helping and making good comments or asking good questions on a daily basis. It's monitored on a full time basis which you don't find on other sites. There is also a lot of fun stuff that goes on. Shopped pictures, jokes, having fun with each other. Called a Community. With what we pay on a yearly basis is nothing compaired to what we have here "A real community" Everyone isn't going to like all the answere but the answers are what they are. Can some of the answers be questioned, sure. However it should be done with a bit of class and also one should know when it's time to stop. Don't want to agree with me, well that is a persons option but facts are facts and that is all I stated. Thank you.

I made the suggestion to both Island Dog and Zubaz that updates could be announced 1st in ONE sticky thread only Stardockians have write access to, but I guess that is not desired.

now that's quite a intelligent statement for a so called moderator to make. So according to you, if my opinion doesn't match yours then it's butt out? give me a break.

It's called an opinion Jafo, and neither you or anyone else will tell me i have no right to it. It wasn't anything offensive but of course lets just blow it out of proportion. What next... exile perhaps?, maybe a forum ban?. Take a chill pill and stop being so sensitive

No, but it was posted in:

I liked Impulse and hope they take the time to do the new system right. It will get here when it gets here. We are all waiting together.

Edit: the forums made a mess of that cut and paste. o_O

OK, everyone.

This thread was posted in the 'Support Forums'.

It has been mentioned before now that such threads seeking assistance are to be responded to ONLY by those who CAN provide assistance, be that from Stardock Support OR from experienced/knowledgeable Community Members.

This thread was derailled at #3.

My response [#8] was to restore direction.

#9 was a very nice/appreciated comment but still a little off course.

#10 was Support concurring.

Time to close it now, and for ALL to be reminded what Support Forums are for.
