QUESTIONS ABOUT DEFENCE hp vs def?

is it a valid stratergy to use just hp rather than try to match defence types? hp is hp against any damage type right? also I remember reading somewhere that there is an item that defends all damage types what is it and which race have it? I have all expasions but as I play ToA most im asking more about that than any other

I've never ended up in the end-game with the Doom weapons and all, but in the early and mid-games defense is vastly superior; well-chosen defenses properly deployed can make your combat fleets nearly invulnerable = invincible.  Extra HPs, which take up nearly as much space as the defenses, just mean you last three battles instead of two.

yes invulnerable is better than longer till you die I see your point. ive been using hp only and a bonus ive found is the ships survive long enough to lvl up more which gives yet more hp. though this same advantage would exisit with the right def too I supose. Any idea if there is a 3in1 def compontent or did I imagine that? Im sure I herd talk of it on this forum but I dont remeber what post

and do you have any tips for quickly finding out what weps/def an AI has as to counter it in time? so far ive been able to tell by engaging them (im getting the info from the battle screen but that only happens in fleet battles can you get the same info in a 1v1 fight?) or looking at what tech they have and guessing. is there a better way?

If you want to see what are the AI's using,

A trick I use is to open up the diplomacy screen, look over to the AI's ship-list-for-sale, scroll about, and right click on some interesting ones.

That should help out (somewhat).

There is no 3-in-1 defense.

HP is inferior to defense for one very good reason: Defense refreshes at the beginning of every round.  Not only does HP not do so, but HP only repairs some of the time when in open space (although it does repair each turn when docked at a planet).

Furthermore, endgame ships can have, with bonuses, and particularly in TA with more mining modules as well as extra attack/defense percentage modules, anywhere from ~600 to ~1000+ attack a piece.  You simply can't stack up enough hp to do anything about that much firepower-and still have any kind of firepower whatsoever of your own.

However, I do find HP to be useful on the issue of heavily armored flagships (i.e. ships at the size of at least large and have shielding like no other).

Because probability states that sooner or later, you will get hit for damage.

Simply put, even you roll badly, at least they will not wreck your ships unless your luck is really bad!

thanks for the help all makes sense to me now

There are several ways of knowing how the enemy is equipping ships:

1. As stated, check in the diplo screen; look at the latest, largest warship the opponent of choice has.

2. Once you've got some level of intelligence, you can directly click on enemy fleets and see their stats.

3. The best way of all, though, is to determine what 'tech your enemies use. either develop one line yourself and trade it to everyone, or wait 'till someone starts down a line, buy it at any price, and then trade it to everyone else.  The develop a different line yourself -- you may need to research periodically in the 'bait' line to keep some of the more agressive AIs on-track -- and develop defenses to the line you're feeding everyone else.

I learnt most of my def/hp/attack info from the variety of ships/fleets that the AI uses against me.

If I see a race repeatedly winning battles against another race,  that is a guide to what will be effective against the loser.  Similarly it is can be a guide to what is ineffective.  Subject to having the right sort of tech available or quickly researchable...
