The war machine must be stopped...

I was playing a custom neutral race with the yor tech tree (if that makes a dif). Game started out fine, I was allied with the Yor. The Yor went to war with someone and I broke the alliance because I didn't want to go to war in the first 3 weeks ><. A few turns later the yor declare war on me, so I start wiping them out when I had researched enough military tech and suffered countless yor atks. Halfway through attacking them they ask for peace. I'm not going to accept this cause they're evil, going to end up breaking the peace etc etc. SO I wipe them out completely and all is well.

I scrap all my military ships because I'm not at war with anyone and had good relationships. A few turns later the Torrians relationship with me dropped (didn't notice). They said "We gave the galaxy the warp drive and feel you have abused it" or so, and declared war. Another few turns later the Drath and Arceans both said "We have to stop the war machine" and declared war on me. And another few turns later the Thalans declare war "We have to stop your war machine".

I had good relationships with all these races and then they all make alliances with each other and declare war on me claiming I'm causing to much war even though I had no military ships... why? :(

Is it because:

  • I broke my alliance with the evil Yor (who were attacking the Drath, yet the Drath start attacking me later)?
  • I didn't accept the Yor peace offering for obvious reasons?
  • Or possibly... because I had 3 scout survey ships flying around in other civilizations territory (they only had engines and survey module...)

Actually, the most likely reason is "none of the above". The two reasons the AI tends to do this are:

  • They're genuinely scared of you and want to stop you from getting stronger, or
  • They're much more powerful then you and are using this as an excuse - this does happen, and from the sound of it it happened in this case.

Feels more like a bug than the second reason :( Ah well, I guess being nice won't always avoid war ><

Another reason why they will attack you is that if you attack and kill off too many civilizations in a short time (I get this problem when squashing minor races), You will get a permanent diplomacy penalty with most civilizations simply because they are afraid that they are next.

Just saying...

If you do enough spying to be able to see the reports on the other races, you'll see that in the "Relationship Factors" there's a "++Our military strength" if you're much stronger than they are.  This switches to negative if you're much weaker than they are, especially for races with an opposite ethical alignment.  They don't respect you unless you're strong.

It is because you scrapped all your military after the war. You became so weak militarily and other civs think you are easy pickings now. Don't scrap your military unless they are too obsolete and too costly to upgrade.
