Microsoft’s Windows 7 Touchmouse Has Arrived

In an earlier article I mentioned that the Touchmouse had been announced and that it would reach the market in about eight months.

Well, it’s here.

There’s a good review on Neowin.net, and Microsoft has a webpage with a vid and pics along with it’s promo stuff.

Quick take from Andrew Lyle at Neowin.net:

Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Gestures are very easy to use
  • Great look and feel, very comfortable to hold
  • Works on any surface and has great precision

Cons:

  • $79.99 MSRP for a mouse
  • Not really intended to be a gaming mouse
  • No middle click button

He also felt that this was the best mouse he’d ever used.

I fully expect that folks won’t like the price. Neither do I. So, on Amazon it’s $61.99. Shop around. Another minus? It isn’t a gaming mouse.

Can’t shop around that negative. Also, I don’t see a “pinch and expand” feature. That would be a very useful one to add, Microsoft (if you’re listening).

No middle click button

This is a deal breaker. Having a middle mouse button/scroll wheel is the main reason I use a real mouse instead of the one built into my laptop.

1:The cons outweigh the Pros by at least 65 bucks. It should include the kb for that kind of money and I doubt if it even comes with batteries.

2: 80 bucks for a mouse to shuffle documents with?  I think not.

3: Less features than a standard $10-$20 mouse. I'll stick with Logitech. My fingers still have enough strength to click it's buttons just fine.

Gwenio1, the scroll button is a gesture with the index finger up and down the mouse.... (image from Neowin, slightly enlarged and emphasized in Jing + Ps)

I'm thinking of a new mouse.....this looks promising...;)

It's a good mouse... my own biggest criterion is how comfortable is it in my hand, and can I use it with Ps... how accurate is it?

MS's mice (except for a big, wired trackball) are kind of small...

So I use the Wired trackball with the desktop and a Logitech with the laptop... just don't wish to spend $99 for my "almost perfect mouse" (the Hippus handshoe mouse 2 buttons and a scroll wheel).

So, I understand you, Wiz. Just reporting the news, not recommending one or another...

Wait... continuing my conspiracy theory about mouses with side buttons. Can this thing detect gestures just on the top, or also on the side?

End of DrJBHL's quote

So can the mouse built into my laptop. But neither is also a button. (and somethings do not react properly to the scroll feature of the built in mouse, but that is beside the point)
